CB500/550 / New tank for sale on ebay
« on: April 09, 2023, 07:32:59 PM »
Has anybody had experience of buying a new tank from eBay? I have seen a new steel and chromed,or polished aluminium tank, complete with cap for sale from a company called ‘vintage-classic-parts44’ for £270. This is for a 1974 550.
They also say they can make tanks to any size.
Is this likely to be poor quality and false economy? Does this sound genuine?

CB500/550 / 500F2 speedo cable length
« on: August 19, 2022, 11:52:09 AM »
My speedo cable length is 38”. What I am after is a shorter one at about 30” - this is because i have fitted a very small front mudguard and the current cable just looks ugly and spoils the line and look at the front. I tried the tacho cable which has the same fittings but this is too short at 26”.
Does anyone know where I can get either a 30” speedo cable or a 30” tacho cable please.
I was wondering if perhaps a different model may be of the required size.
All ideas appreciated. Thanks.

CB500/550 / 550F2 not firing on cylinders 1 & 4
« on: July 19, 2022, 04:30:11 PM »
So it was with great delight that I started the engine for the first time today - brilliant it sprang into life. But before I could really congratulate myself I discovered that cylinders 1 & 4 were not firing.
I have done no investigative work yet. Was wondering if anyone could give some tips on the most likely cause and the order and best way to start checking things please.
PS the engine was run 'remotely' with the bare minimum wiring required.

CB500/550 / Rear brake stay arm fitting
« on: June 06, 2022, 08:25:19 PM »
I am in the process of fitting the rear brake stay arm and have a few questions please;
1. Where the stay arm is connected to the brake end should it be free to move? I inserted the T-shape shoulder bolt, then the rubber washer, then the stay arm, then a washer that slides over the bolt threads but not onto the shoulder, then the nut. When all in place there is approximately 5mm of lateral movement of the stay arm. Is this OK? Seems excessive to me in my ignorance.
2. Where the stay arm attaches under the swing arm, should this be tight and no free play?
Thanks in anticipation.

CB500/550 / 550F2 exhaust collar clamps not flush with cylinder head
« on: April 27, 2022, 12:39:09 PM »
Hi Guys,
I have fitted my exhausts which are 2 modified 2 into 1 exhausts. I think they have been modified from the originals.
I have cleaned out the exhaust ports thoroughly, removed the old gaskets and fitted new ones.
The collars have been cleaned and fitted in the correct orientation, BUT, when I tighten up the collar clamps they do not sit flush onto the cylinder head - they sit approximately 2mm to 3mm off. Photo attached.
Everything is clean and sits nicely, nothing was forced into position, it all looked good.
Could any one advise if this is correct, acceptable, or have I missed something.

CB500/550 / What year is my cb 550 please
« on: April 21, 2022, 09:11:53 PM »
Hi guys,
I have recently acquired a honda cb550F.
The V5 says it was registered in 1979.
The frame No. is CB550F-2113328
Engine No. is CB550E-1153025
My research makes me think it is an F3 from 1977
Could anybody please let me know if this is correct. Also does it look like the frame and engine are 'matching'.
