Thanks for all the advice lads. I'll get started and keep you all posted with the developments. I'll get a few pictures up once I get the fuse issue sorted.

CB750 / Phil Read Rep - 15 Amp Main Fuse keeps blowing
« on: August 20, 2015, 12:16:06 AM »
Hi Folks,

I have just finished putting the big PRR back together. Took it for a spin after getting it MOT'd only to find it keeps blowing the 15 Amp Main Fuse. The net result is no lights, no starter, nothing. The first time it blew was travelling along the road at 70 mph then nothing. I replaced the fuse only to find it blew the second time travelling at 30 mph. The third time it blew was after a short run out. I switched the bike off, had a chat to a friend turned it on tried the starter but the dam fuse had blown again.

Any ideas? I read on the forum that the ignition with may be at fault?

Hi Bytio, sorry for the delay in a reply, currently residing in N Ireland. Have you had your engine re-painted and if so what type of paint did you use. I have some of the paint starting to flake of and was considering getting it painted. I am finding it difficult to get PJ 1 Satin black paint at present.

Hi Steve,

Sorry for the delay in the reply, work is starting to get in the way of my social life....... To answer your question, yes. The bike was in a private collection from 1983. It has only covered 2189 miles (40 from 1987). The exhaust looks in good condition as the whole bike has received several layers of oil to help keep her in good condition.
That looks a fine example in the photo.

Hi folks,

A quick question, was the engine finish on the PPR 750F2 pained black satin or was it powder coated. I read a recent article form a lad who restored a Yamaha 750 who used PJ1 Satin finish but stated you can no longer get the paint due to the lead content. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for all the sound advice and kind comments regarding the bike lads. Pete, those rims look great. Looks like I have a little bit of work ahead of me. I'll keep the site updated with my progress.

Thanks for the advice and Photos.

I have attached some photos of the old girl. She is not in bad shape but just needs some care to bring her back to mint. She has stood in a garage since 1983 covered in a film of oil.

The spokes and hubs are a little pitted and I had hoped to maybe have the hubs painted. Is this easy done. I intend to repaint the lower fork legs as the paint is flaking a little. The engine fins are similar. Were the engines painted or powder coated?

Hi Yoshi823,

You are correct. I'm new to this classic game. I recall having these rims on my Honda CB250 Super Dream. I now have them on may recently purchased Phil Read Replica and was wondering if there is anyone out there that can refurbish them if required? Any advice would be most helpful.
Thanks for keeping me right regarding the comstars, the forum has proven beneficial already........I think I could become quite an expert before this project is finished....ha ha ha

Thanks for the welcome folks. I will hopefully manage to get time and get the old girl photographed. The big girl is all there, just needs a good clean. Some of the paint on the fork lower fork legs needs refreshing whilst the is some pitting is evident on the engine cases. Was these engines powder coated or painted? I would also feel a little more reassured if I could replace the brake hoses with new ones, are they still available?

Hi all,

I recently had the good fortune to purchase a Phil Read Replica. It is in original condition with very few miles. I am considering restoring the old girl to concourse condition and would welcome any advice. I've been around bikes since childhood and have worked on many over the years so have some mechanical knowledge. This is the first classic project and advice on the model would be invaluable. I currently ride a BMW K1300GT SE and a Ducati 996s and am looking forward to getting the big Honda on the road to impress a few friends. I'm looking forward to picking the experts brains
