I think Goffy does some 45/40w H4's as a reasonable compromise. http://www.norbsa02.freeuk.com/goffybulbs.htm

You might want to think about replacing your binnacle lights with LED's to reduce some of the load on the charging system, but that's about it. I would shy away from replacing headlights/taillights with LED's. As far as I'm aware, the UK legality of these LED units is still very grey. Also, make sure your wiring loom and contacts/connections are clean, properly seated and in good nick. I asked much the same questions myself when I first showed up on here and that was pretty much the sage and sane advice I was given. There's plenty of searchable discussion in the archives about this on here and over on the US site.
Nick.

Thanks gents, I seem to have discovered I'm a latent OCD, this build thing has become all consuming and sometimes I get blinded by unnecessary minutiae before the 'if it ain't broke' fairy of commonsense pops in for a cuppa.  I did get hold of a plug and play led affair from an e marked unit that I thought would do the job but on install the lens pattern of the stock taillight cancelled out any visible enhancement. I have had a chat with the chap on matchlessclueless and he seems keen to fab up some plug and play led boards with new type leds for sohc if enough interest exists, he's doing some for modern 'Bonnie's' that do seem to work well. However, saner minds and all that, I'll probably just stick with the standard filament bulb. Once again. thanks for taking the time. Nick.

Misc / Open / LED light legality question.
« on: April 25, 2013, 04:03:52 AM »
Have I missed a trick? I've been agonising over the legalities/insurance/mot issues regarding non filament, non 'E' marked leds' for the constantly revised rear light setup on my 76 550f.  And I stumbled across this :

Filament lamps14.—(1) Where a motor vehicle first used on or after 1st April 1986 or any trailer manufactured on or after 1st October 1985 is equipped with any lamp of a type that is required by any Schedule to these Regulations to be marked with an approval mark, no filament lamp other than a filament lamp referred to in the Designation of Approval Marks Regulations in–
(a)regulation 4 and Schedule 2, items 2 or 2A, 8, 20, 37 or 37A; or
(b)regulation 5 and Schedule 4, item 18,
shall be fitted to any such lamp.

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/made

and this from the BMF 'Know your rights':

'Headlights must show a white light or yellow tint, any other colour is illegal. The headlight bulb must not be above 55 watts but there is no limit to the number of headlamps on bikes constructed or registered after 1984. Before 1985 there is no limit and there is no requirement for it to have an E stamp on it. '

It says headlights etc but you know what I mean. I would value your opinions.

CB500/550 / CB550f1 exhaust gasket and bulb question.
« on: October 20, 2012, 02:26:15 PM »
Dear Sages of the Grey Council,
I'm having to replace the 4 exhaust gasket rings.
Question: I can find them in both alloy and copper. Which ones would you advise, does one type confer some kind of advantage or is it purely academic?
David Silver part number 18291390306

Also, and this is a real dumbass' question: I want to replace the idiot console and speedo/tacho bulbs with like for like LED's such as those on Norbsa Goffy's site. Can some kind soul tell me what bulbs are used on the bike,  ba9s or ba7 or ba15 or 1272's or whatever please? I'm confused over the different serial numbers, product codes and arbitrary designations etc.

Cheers,
sorry, Nick.

Misc / Open / LED rear light and a Hondaman plug.
« on: September 06, 2012, 03:20:17 PM »
I don't do photos yet.  Progress. I've bought this (yes I know and whatever and talk to the hand girl-friend etc);
http://www.24mx.co.uk/motorcycle/p/twenty-led-taillight/386/lights-and-indicators/k261/
SERIAL NO: E4 12v  2.4w/o.5w     50R-00 1383   YM-2875E LED (knowledge is power).
I wanted the board out of it to fettle into a 550 rear light housing. 35 red leds rearward facing and 4 white leds for the plate.
Did a quick rig and it worked ok.

Caveat: I don't know much about this company and their delivery outfit for my purchase was 'hdnl' who seem to have a fair few disgruntled customers but I was very, very drunk. Anyway, item arrived, properly packaged, within delivery estimate and as described.

Honourable plug: More progress, I've purchased an transistorized electronic ignition system from Mark Paris ... Hondaman ... as per universal recommendation. It's all true. Mark, you're a gentleman and a scholar.

The 'easy fixer-upper' still sits in our boys shed, right next to the bucket of rocking horse shat and the crate of humble pie. Anyway, we are into the motor at last and I've learned lots of new words, like helicoil, left hand twist, prograbit and die die die. I have a question, what does this do?

Cos' there were none inside when I finally got the cylinder head cover off. Haynes and Clymer are no bloody help. I've got the replacements but before I bung em in I thought I should canvas the Grey council in case leaving them out is akin to some kind of warp drive fettle that only the sages know about.

Cheers, Nick.
