CB350/400 / wrong sided horn
« on: April 30, 2018, 08:11:51 PM »
While changing a throttle cable I noticed the horn is mounted on the near side as opposed to the correct. Simples eh just swap it over... nope it fouls on the number 3 ht lead and no matter what it will not fit. So returned to original/wrong position. It still works but it means that the loom support that should be there isn't but hasn't been for some time so no matter. Question is the horn is about 100mm in diameter is it the right size horn or a replacement which is bigger hence why it's mounted the other side. Over to you!

And finally, to close pics of the 2 tanks the primer red one is the good one. there is no doubt that the other is a 400/4 but it's had a bash :-\ thanks all for your interest and advice.

CB350/400 / whats going on with cam chain adjuster bolt
« on: March 18, 2018, 05:05:09 PM »
while tinkering/fettling after all these years of owning the bike I've finally noticed this, just shows I've never used cam chain adjuster! probably seized anyway! it would appear previous owner/owners has carried out some sort of "mod" it uses an Allen bolt for the adjuster bolt and would appear to have a sort of pin drilled though - perhaps to lock it. I work on the principle of if it ain't broke don't fix it but any ideas? Bike runs fine as is by the way.

Well it was cold in the workshop but i battled the elements to take some pictures. i have titled the pictures "Query" and "Correct" for clarity. Much closer scrutiny would indicate that at some stage the query tank has had a "knock" or similar as there appears to be a crease around the head-stock area which could have somehow forced the sides together, not much but sufficient to reduce the clearance, also the lugs are slightly out of level on the query tank but only slightly. i suppose i could strip the tank to see if there is wadges of filler to establish the "Knock" theory - do you reckon it could be "persuaded" out slightly or is it a scrapper, shame because inside it's quite good.

Thanks Ian, I've no idea what I've got then! it's not a 350 tank for sure - nothing like it. but it's so like a 400/4 apart from it won't fit at the one point ! Puzzled of Sussex  :-\

CB350/400 / interchangeable fuel tanks
« on: March 13, 2018, 07:36:17 AM »
Are the CB 350 & 400 fuel tanks interchangeable? Reason for asking is that I have a second hand tank which is I believe for a 400/4. However after selling it the buyer contacted me to say it wouldn't fit his frame. Having sorted him I collected the tank from him, and as soon as I got home offered it up to my 400/4- and he's right 😒. Is it possibly a 350 tank ,it's about 10mm too narrow where it would locate on the rubbers below the headstock and snags the main frame tube. The tank doesn't appear bent or damaged so that it would have been compressed, any ideas?

I know the ones you mean. Mr. Silver has them. Would be nice if that's all but the way my lucks running at the moment I suspect not but changing them wouldn't be a bad idea while I'm doing it.

Any pointers Ka Ja that might give a clue as to what to look for on cylinder head bolts -I'm guessing perished rubber washers, seals etc.

CB350/400 / oil leak below barrels
« on: December 26, 2017, 11:54:05 AM »
Not withstanding my cylinder head troubles, my main ride also 400/4, has developed an oil leak below the barrels on the near side front-it seemed to appear after I used an oil flush when doing an oil change. It's not gushing out but weeps slowly and I now have a well oiled left boot. It then runs over the crankcase as the heat and wind disperses it. The big question is it an engine out job ? There is no loss in compression and starts and runs fine, unfortunately the scrutineer at Brands Hatch didn't like it so I couldn't take part in a VJMC paradeā˜¹ which is what motivates me to get it done. As far as I'm aware the engines never been out,40 year old nuts and bolts fills me with dread.

Thanks all, the cost of the repair works makes it cheaper to look for another head i guess. ho hum that's the joys of our pastimes i suppose. but having had it vapour blasted/sprayed /new valves/ lapping in and helicoils fitted it really hurts. i guess i can remove the valves and valve guides, valve springs /cotters etc as they're new and reuse on another head, providing i can get the guides out without damaging them!

Not what I wanted to hear Colin! Obviously it's cost a bit to get this far, but my inner voice is telling me you're right. Bugger bugger bugger.
