CB350/400 / IDLE PROBLEMS CB400/4
« on: May 22, 2017, 07:02:58 PM »
Hi Chaps
Having problems with Hettie, the 400/4.
When first started from cold she idles fine at about 1100 rpm but when hot the idle increases intermittently to about 2000 rpm and then gradually settles back to 1100 rpm.  Have had the carbs off today as I thought it may be  dirty idle jets. Dismantled the carbs, blew everything out with airline, no blockages. Floats are where I set them last year, 21mm, re bench synced. Mixture screws at 2 turns. Couldn't find evidence of any air leaks on any rubber bits, refitted carbs.... still the same problem. Checked the timing / points all seem ok.
Where should I look next?

Misc / Open / SORN (again, yawn, yawn)
« on: February 27, 2017, 12:52:48 PM »
I was catching up on some admin the other week and thought I would just check that all the bikes we have here off the road are still SORN'd. Now, a majority of them were but I have 3 that I SORN'd last year, I have the printouts showing the SORN reference numbers from DVLA and I know it is now continuous , ie, the SORN will remain until either the bike is taxed of a change of owner is registered but they are showing as non SORN'd. So I SORN'd them again the other day, I was given a SORN reference number again but having just checked their status again, they still show as not SORN !!!!. I have been in touch with DVLA and this was their response

Thank you for your enquiry received on 25/2/2017.
Your case reference number is 00031380.

It might be helpful if I explain that on the 31 January 1998 the law changed. Keepers are now required to notify DVLA if their vehicles are to be kept off the public road untaxed.

The scheme only applies to vehicles where the vehicle tax has expired on or after 31 January 1998. As your vehicle U*M***S was untaxed on this date, it does not fall into the Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) scheme. It will only become liable to SORN if it is re-taxed and then subsequently taken off the road.

I have contacted DVLA again asking why on all their documentation it says a vehicle must be taxed or SORN and nowhere does it state the above. I have also asked them what is the point of going through the process and being issued with a SORN reference number, for no reason at all. I will let you know what comes back from them.

Now, I may be the only person on the forum, or indeed the UK that does not know about the above but I doubt it very much.

CB500/550 / WILL THE RIM FIT????
« on: February 13, 2017, 07:18:45 PM »
Hi Chaps
On my CB550 project, I quite fancy a chunky looking back wheel instead of the standard size of 1.85 x 18. The question is will a 2.15 x 18 CB750 wheel rim have enough clearance in my CB550f swing arm ?

CB350/400 / CB 400/4 Headlamp
« on: November 14, 2016, 05:23:33 PM »
I'm sure this topic has been covered before but, I can't find I anywhere.
The inside reflector on my headlamp has got quite a bit of rust at the bottom so I'm going to get a new headlamp. At present, the original Stanley Honda one is fitted but I would like more powerful bulbs in the new one, halogen maybe. Has anyone purchased one recently and where from? I have a new Lucas 7" one here but it's too big for the rim, therefore won't fit  :'( :'(

CB500/550 / AIR BOX TO CARB RUBBERS CB550 - not sure which ones to use.
« on: August 23, 2016, 05:30:17 PM »
Hi Chaps

Just putting together the air box for my CB550 K3 which is now an F, but I have a query. I have two sets of air box to carb rubbers here and they are both different. I'm not sure which set to use. I'm using Keihin 069A carbs, I'm wondering if there are different size rubbers between PD carbs and the 069A's and I'm wondering which ones to use?. They are similar but, not quite the same, or does it matter as long as they fit tight at both the air box end and carb end, any ideas anyone?.

CB350/400 / Hettie wont start on the button !!
« on: July 16, 2016, 06:41:52 PM »
 :'( :'( :'(
Hi Chaps
Went to take the CB400/4 out today and for the first time ever, she would not start on the button. She has not been standing as have taken her out 3 times this week and she started fine with the kick start today. On the button it sounded like the solenoid was clicking, but then no noise at all from solenoid. Took her out for a ride hoping battery would charge but nothing. Definitely charging as lights go brighter when revving.
Battery charged to 15A on meter (off the bike), dropped to 13.7A after 3 hours. Have tried another new battery and tried 3 other solenoids, still nothing, had starter motor out which was turning freely on the button but then that stopped turning also. Tried keying the solenoid between the terminals and there were sparks. So, it appears battery has enough amps to start bike, unless 13.7A is not enough, power is getting from battery to solenoid and power is getting from solenoid to starter motor. What's happening and what do I try next ?

CB500/550 / CLUTCH LEVER CB550
« on: June 14, 2016, 07:22:44 PM »
Hi Chaps.
A question. What are these clutch levers coated with as standard, is it BZP or Chrome?
I have one for my CB550 but it has seen better days. Mind you, I have found this one at DSS and quite honestly, it looks like shite so I may have mine re plated instead if that's the best DSS have to offer  :o :o :o.

A man is lying in a hospital bed with an oxygen mask over his mouth, A beautiful nurse walks in to check up on him,
"Nurse,"he mumbles from behind his oxygen mask,
 "Are my testicles black?"
Embarrassed, the young nurse replies,"I don't know, im only here to sit you up or help you roll over."
Struggling,he again asks,"are my testicles black?"
Young nurse replies,"I don't know, im not a doctor I cant check that."
he again asks,"are my testicles black, I know you can check?"
Finally she raises his gown, holds his penis in one hand, and holds his testicles in the other,"There's nothing wrong with them!"

The man pulls off his oxygen mask and replies,

"That was nice, but are my test results back"
