CB350/400 / Exhaust condensation
« on: April 18, 2015, 09:47:03 AM »
Hi Chaps

Just started bike up and there is small puddle of sooty/ watery condensation on the floor under where down pipe No.1 joins the collector box. This wasn't there before I started it up from cold but noticed it the other day also when starting up. Last time I took it out I did about 100 miles and thought that would be plenty of miles to burn off any condensation in the pipes.I have had a quick feel along the collector box and the silencer and cannot find any drain holes so I'm assuming the water collects as bike is cooling down and can't find it's way out till I start her up again. Should there be a drain hole somewhere and why didn't this happen last year ?. I had system off over the winter and other than fitting new exhaust packing between 1 and 3 and the collector to the silencer, nothing has changed. Any ideas?

CB350/400 / Wiring in headlamp 400/4
« on: March 08, 2015, 12:17:57 PM »
Hi Chaps.
I had a slight problem with the handlebar switches. Could not get horn to work all the time and no main beam up and no headlamp flasher / passing light either. Took left hand switch apart, cleaned, re sprung the springs a bit. Horn now working, now have main beam, a mystry to me as I thought that all happened on the right hand side!!. Also had spaghetti wiring out of headlamp bowl, to check connections etc. Anyways, the passing light is still not working, does it only work when engine running?.

CB350/400 / 400/4 Horn Switch
« on: February 24, 2015, 09:09:29 PM »
Hi Chaps
More advice please.
The horn switch on my 400 was very loose and sloppy, I had to keep wiggling it around and eventually the horn would sound. I thought it may be a loose connection so had a look inside . All the wires are attached  but there was a minute little screw missing that appeared to hold things together in there. I replaced the screw which made the horn switch, and everything else, tighter but the horn won't work again now. What am I doing wrong, any ideas?

CB350/400 / Manifold bands
« on: February 17, 2015, 09:45:03 PM »
Hi Chaps
I'm trying to find some of the metal bands that attach the carbs to the manifold at the front and the air box at the back on my 400/4. At present there are just ordinary stainless jubilee clips there but although they do a perfectly reasonable job, I don't like them and they have got to go. What I understand is that originally they were black with a screw through to tighten them. DSS do a substitute but they are approx £5 each and I would need 4 of 1 part number and 4 of another, therefore about £40 in all. Does anyone know of a similar band that is available at a lower price ?.

CB350/400 / Carb float settings - advice please
« on: February 12, 2015, 12:52:34 PM »
Hi Chaps.
Putting carbs back together. I have 3 floats sitting at 21mm and 1 sitting at 22.5mm. Am I right in assuming I just adjust the little brass tab in the centre of the float arm to take up the difference ?.

Misc / Open / POLICE ...........scary or what
« on: February 11, 2015, 12:06:39 PM »
I have just had a visit from the local Plod. They tell me my 400/4 was used as a getaway bike on Monday in a bank robbery somewhere (they wouldn't tell me where). I said there was no way my bike was there on that day. They asked what I was doing that day, I told them I could provide an alibi as to my whereabouts. At one stage they even asked if I would go to the police station to answer more questions, I said yes, if it helps. Now this conversation was going on in my front room. Not once did they ask if my 400 was here, so I said, would they like to see my bike ?. They looked at each other, a bit puzzled and said yes. So I took them through to the conservatory and showed them the bike. First of all they were very apologetic and then one of the cheeky young upstarts said I could have easily taken the bike apart between then an now !!!! My bike is in bits and has been for weeks. If they had known how bloody long it had taken me to strip my bike and start putting it back together (an awful long time, well weeks anyway), they would have know the bike could not have been anywhere other than here. They have now left but before they went, I did asked them if they knew the top speed of a 1978 400/4 Honda and did they know if they were regularly used by criminals as getaway bikes.......No reply from them, well I never.  :o :o :o

CB350/400 / I need help with my exhausts as well please
« on: February 09, 2015, 11:16:42 AM »
Hi Chaps.
Attached photo of my down pipes and collector box. I don't know enough to know if they are original (I doubt it) or whose replica they are. When I took them apart the two seperate pipes were pushed well into the collector box, with the clamp tightened up around them. But, there were never any 'packings' in situ only some exhaust compound. Do I need part number 18391-375-000 x 2 or something else?. As you can see by pic the collector box tubes have slits in them.

CB350/400 / White deposits in carbs from Ultra Sonic cleaner
« on: February 02, 2015, 11:57:49 AM »
Hi All.
Just picked up my carbs from the cleaners. Cleaned in a big ultra sonic cleaner with some carb cleaner added. On the whole the carbs look alot cleaner generally but I seem to have what looks like Calcium deposits in some areas. Mainly where the choke flaps are and on the flaps. Also some very small areas of white stuff in some of the outer body nooks and crannies. Now, it seems easy to remove the stuff on the outside but what do I do about the rest and how do I know the internals are not full of this crud as well?. I had removed and will be replacing with new, all the jets that usually hang down in to the bowls so they won't be a problem, but what about everything else inside ?. Should I take the carbs apart from the top as well and check everything ?.Apologies if my explanation's are not too good.

CB350/400 / Help !!! - Carb advice please
« on: January 15, 2015, 05:09:53 PM »
Hi Chaps.

The only carbs I have ever taken apart before are the old Amal ones on my Triumphs and a Trident a life time ago. I am a 'Newbie' when it comes to 400/4 carbs. I need some advice to start please. I think my aim is to get the carbs stripped of the small bits etc so I can put the whole assembly in the dishwasher.I have got the carbs off bike, float bowl, leaf spring, main jet, slow jet, clip plate and valve seat out. If I now start taking it apart from the top end, will I be able to get all the bits out without separating the carbs?. Also. am I right in thinking that if I leave the carbs attached to the back plate, so not ending up with 4 separate carbs, I won't have to have the carbs synchronized? Or, is what I think I'm trying to do not even possible ? :( :( :(

Ta in advance for your help

CB350/400 / Rear Shocks - advice please
« on: January 11, 2015, 11:26:03 AM »
Hi Chaps
I have Hagon shocks on this 400/4. On the nearside bottom fixing the PO has put 3 washers on to move the bolt out by a nano so the end of the bolt misses the nuts that hold the sprocket on. Should I also put a couple of washers on the fixing at the top of the shock, there is only 1 at the moment, so it brings the top out by a nano as well and should I do the same on the offside even though there is nothing for the bottom bolt to foul on ?

Not that I'm a worrier or anything like that but I do hope our friends in Scotland are OK. Would hate to see any of their lovely bikes damaged in the terrible weather going on up there, or any of them or their families being injured.
Hope your all OK chaps

CB350/400 / EXHAUST - SPLIT COLLARS/COLLETS
« on: January 06, 2015, 09:47:52 PM »
Hi Chaps.
What way do your split exhaust collars go in ?. I'm sure that when I took mine out the phlange end was down inside the head but in the Haynes manual they show the phlange out by the frilly retaining rings. I have looked on internet and article on DSS says 'make sure you note which way round the collars are so you can replace them the same way' which leads me to believe they can go either way. I'm confused............please help  :'( :'( :'(
