Project Board / Progress on the DK/DS special
« on: September 03, 2016, 08:33:31 PM »
Hi All,
Had a good day in the garage today and was mostly struggling to get the 4 into 2 exhaust system to fit properly. A wooden mallet helped. Its an unusual system in that cylinders 1 & 4 are connected as is 2 & 3 which gives rise to an unusual sound. I've started but haven't ridden the bike yet but when I eventually get the bike down the road and decide its a 'keeper' I'll shell out for a set of 4 pipes.
There's a little way to go yet. Bit of a horror in whats under under the LH side panel ! Can anyone tell me / post a photo of how it all should be arranged? The solenoid, fuse box, flasher relay and safety circuit box all hang free. the previous owner in Colorado USA must have had shares in Scotchlock connectors - even found them inside the handle bar switch gear.
If I were to do this again, I'd certainly check the head gasket for leaks, as that's why the engine had to come out and it has taken a huge amount of time. Bought it in October 2015 and only now getting to the point where I can ride it. I'd also check for any missing parts and add up what needs replacing as so far I've spent about £700 at David Silver and on eBay for bits like the centre stand which was missing, hoses, pads, gaskets, swing arm bushes and spindle; tons of stuff.
I'll let you know how it runs when I finally get my leg over it which will hopefully be this week.
Ride safe.
Cheers
Phil

CB750 / Were there ever any Candy Red K2s?
« on: August 31, 2016, 12:13:07 PM »
Back in 1969 I owned a C100 50cc Cub but drooled over the CB175 etc in the Honda brochure. Getting to the end of the brochure I dribbled even more at the CB750 and then on the back cover was this photo (should be attached) which blew me away. As a spotty 17 year old I thought that guy was so cool!
Since then I've always wanted a Candy Red CB750. I've had a Planet Blue K2 and now have a Sunrise Orange K2; the paint is a bit scabby so think I'll change it to Candy Red.
The question is though: were there ever any Candy Red K2s (in the UK or USA)? Or was it just K0's and K1's?
Thanks in advance.

CB750 / Re: CB750K2 Swinging arm bushes
« on: August 15, 2016, 01:47:15 PM »
Yep, same here. I've just ordered a new central pin from DS (£50!!) as there wasn't that much wear on the bushes.
Trouble was I'd destroyed them with a hack-saw in getting them out.
Ho Hum.

CB750 / CB750K2 Swinging arm bushes
« on: August 14, 2016, 09:44:31 AM »
Hi all,
Having a laugh a minute this weekend trying to get the old bushes out of the swinging arm; heat, hammers and swearing have all been used to no effect,
Q 1. Anybody got any ideas?
I'm fast approaching the point where I'm going to hacksaw a slot in each bush to get them out.
As recommended, I bought some bushes from Frank in Germany and they are totes different to what I have taken off.
Q2. Do I discard the felt washer, the washer with the rim and the dust cap? Or have I got the wrong parts? They are also sloppy on the central machined tube they sit on so it looks as though I'm going to need a new one of these too.
As always, thanks in advance for any wisdom.

CB750 / Re: Tyres & Wheels
« on: July 31, 2016, 09:59:01 AM »
Hello again Chums,
Still need to know where you get your tyres.
I've done a search through the forum; plenty of info about what sort of tyre but can't find much on Where you get them without being stitched up.
Where is best - ebay, ATS, Black Circles.com, your local bike shop? I was tempted to get some from DS but they don't have any at the mo'
As always, any help appreciated.
Best regards
Phil

Hi All
My DK special had Lesters on when I bought it thinking I could find a set of spoked wheels - not easy unless you want to pay daft money (and even dafter postage) to some kid in the US.
If you are building a special or a café racer and want to do a straight swop I'd be happy. These Lesters go on ebay for about £100 a pop. Although they are a period accessory I would still like a set of spoked wheels if in decent condition.
I'd want to keep the disc, speedo drive and rear sprocket off them but they are in good condition, however the tyres are cracked and wouldn't trust them over about 5mph (tubeless).
Pics should be attached.
Any offers?
Thanks.

Hi,
Me again.
Just wondered what you fellas did for tyres. Want something decent that looks period. Do you use DS, ebay or is there somewhere else?
Incidentally, they will have to go on a set of Lesters. Wasn't keen on these to start with but they are a period accessory and may well keep them in view of the fact that spoked wheels are fairly rare; can't seem to find any. Can get the rims and spokes but not hubs which are currently buried in some landfill in Colorado USA.
Comments welcome.
Cheers all.

CB750 / Re: That sickening feeling we've all had....
« on: June 28, 2016, 08:01:03 AM »
Hello again, Happy to report job done. Got a 6mm helecoil kit off ebay and set to drilling holes in my cylinder head. Blimey, that alloy is like butter; swarf flying everywhere....
Had to fix 3 of the 4 threads, wound the helecoils in with a bit of Loctite (as suggested here - thanks) and another nervous moment when torqueing up the cam carrier bolts. But all went fine, so happy days!!
Thanks for all the confidence inspiring advice as this was a job I wasn't looking forward to.
Regards,
Phil d'A

CB750 / That sickening feeling we've all had....
« on: June 20, 2016, 07:06:33 PM »
DK/DS special progress: had the head skimmed to try and solve the massive oil leak I had.
Head now back on and just bolting down the cam carriers...........when........we all know it...........the resistance suddenly disappears. One stripped thread; well 3 actually.
I think this is due to some abuse its had in a previous life.
I was using the figure of 8ft lbs as given in the Haynes manual for 6mm threads.
Q: has anyone got any experience of Helecoils in an alloy head? The screw holes look to be blind and as long as I cover up the oil holes and valve springs I should be OK....
Whaddya think?
All advice welcome.
Thanks in advance.

CB750 / Re: Whats this??
« on: June 18, 2016, 11:14:23 AM »
Hi Yozzer, thanks for the reply.
Don't think I've got any of those; just got 2 big dowels (part no 11) at each front stud.
What happens if these are left out?
Didn't find any when I took it apart....
Cheers

CB750 / Whats this??
« on: June 18, 2016, 09:33:18 AM »
Hello Chums,
I was a bit peed off to spend £40 on a set of gaskets from DS only to find that some O rings are missing; like the crucial ones between the barrels and head.
However, also got some rubber oil seals and don't know what they are for; don't remember seeing these on the strip down.
They are soft rubber rings about 8mm high and 15mm in diameter and there are 8 of them.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Tricks & Tips / Re: Alloy polishing
« on: June 05, 2016, 08:18:32 AM »
Hello Gents,
Re alloy polishing: the DK special is fast turning into a DS special and needs far more work than originally envisaged.
I failed to spot the worst head gasket leak ever and so the engine is out of the frame. Whilst out, I took the only opportunity I would have to polish up the scabby valve cover. Hopefully the attached image is there:
Cost £50 and trouble is that I'm going to have to get the rest of the engine up to the same standard....
Done by I&P Polishing just off junction 9 on the M5 at Tewksbury tel 01684 274094. A one man band who normally does aircraft under-carriage legs but takes on little jobs like this too.

Don't whatever you do lock up the front wheel !!
To see what happened, I did this in the wet on the Embankment in about '76 when I was a despatch rider on my CB250 K2 and ended up right on my arse. A bit surprising for anybody following.

CB750 / DK Special update
« on: March 13, 2016, 10:50:00 AM »
Found the oil leak.....
When I bought it I could see it had been 'down the road' a few times but I wasn't expecting that.

Also, while I'm on: I've had all the plug leads off and didn't mark them. (doh!)
Looking at the points, I assume the leads from one coil serves cylinders 1 & 4, whilst the other serves 2 & 3. But which of the two coils goes to which??
