CB500/550 / Re: 500 gearbox bearing
« on: October 24, 2021, 07:45:35 PM »
I'm thinking it's on it's way as there seems to be quite a whining from that side when under load, could be the bearing or a worn gear. It's not the chain as the noise goes when you pull the clutch in and freewheel. I would like a bearing in my hand before stripping the motor and finding that none are available. There are some out in Germany at silly money plus silly postage. A very last resort.!!

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately it's the other side 91002 283 003, but depending on price I could replace both as it would be in bits anyway!!

Anybody know of any bearing factors that can supply gearbox sprocket bearings for a 500, or is it pay through the nose for the genuine item??

Tricks & Tips / Carb balancing
« on: April 06, 2021, 03:23:14 PM »
After cleaning carbs, setting float heights etc on my 500/4 and then promptly forgetting to check the slide opening on the bench, I replaced the carbs and proceeded to balance them without much success, as we all know when pinching up the adjuster lock nuts they go out of sync. With the factory set No.3 adjuster having been moved over the years and not knowing where it should be, I sat and thought about it for a while not wanting to remove the carbs again.
I removed all the tops of the carbs, slackened the adjuster lock nuts and adjusted them all so the slides so they completely shut off. Check they where the same by measuring with a vernier from the tops of the carbs to the tops of the slides. Pinched the lock nuts up and adjusted the throttle stop screw so it just moved the slides up from completely closed. Start it up and apart from some very minor adjustments on two carbs it run sweet as. AND when you blipped  the throttle, it shut off immediate to a tickover without waiting for the revs to drop. To make things easier in the future I replaced the two carb top screws directly under the top frame tube with 4mm bolts.
May not be the factory way of doing things but it worked for me and found it very easy to do.

Question that's probably been asked 1000's of times before. Will a 550 top end fit on 500 crankcases??

If Dave Silvers not interested try Sammy Millers Museum, they put all sorts of meetings on during a normal year. Failing that arrange a meeting at Box Hill or somewhere like that through this forum??

Thanks Trigger, So next question, is it the fork bottoms are longer?? Fork tubes shorter, springs the same rate. All I can tell you that it certainly feels very funny on the front end and not the sort of thing you would chuck into a corner.  Tube are straight and forks not twisted, but quite hard and not much movement. Springs are far longer than the manual states, nearly 480mm. Changed the oil  to 10w and waiting for progressive spring. 550 and 500 spring lengths are the same according to the manual. Time will tell!!
