CB350/400 / Carb balancing
« on: April 16, 2020, 10:24:39 AM »
Thoughts most welcome of the following.

My perhaps unscientific approach to carb balancing in the past was to use a stethoscope at the inlets, listen to the hiss, and basically to try and get the them all to sound the same. This seemed to work well on twin carbs fitted to old classic cars/bikes in the past in order to gain a reasonable balance, along with fiddling about a bit with the idle mix screws.

I still have the stethoscope, so would the same reasonable balance be obtained on the 4 carbs of the Honda using a similar method?

Alternatively, I have noted the cheap Chinese dial gauge stuff on EBay, and wodered whether they may offer a more suitable method...Clearly it may not be the best made stuff, but a more accurate method than the stethoscope perhaps?

CB350/400 / Fuses
« on: April 14, 2020, 11:49:08 AM »
Can someone please explain this to me. Tail light not working...Checked all connections/earths/wires - all fine. Checked fuse. It had continuity and resistance - 0 ohms. Changed fuse regardless, checked continuity and resistance -  0 ohms. Tail light still not working. Much disconnecting, checking ignition, earths - complete PIA. Thought - check voltage across each fuse terminal - with fuses in place. The 4 on the lower 2 fuses all good - 11.5V, The tail fuse only one terminal 11.5V the other 0V...aha! Changed fuse again - and I now have a tail light. Deeply annoying that the fuse should show no resistance yet does not allow current! Am I going mad?

CB350/400 / Wiring problem rev2

Right - think I will exhaust my stock of goodwill with you all, but here goes anyway

Blowing 15A fuse I think is sorted - fine, we'll see how it goes. Many thanks to all

Now connecting things up, and as far as I can see, everything has gone back exactly the same way - except regulator is disconnected.

Here's the thing

With the 15A and the 7A headlight fuse in place - all seems good. Ignition on and we have dash lights, indicators work, starter works etc - all good.
With the 15A, the 7A headlight fuse in place, and then the 7A tail fuse in place. Ignition on, and woe! All 4 indicators on permanently, but at least headlight and tail lamp light up!

Something clearly amiss....As ever any clues gratefully accepted. Short again - bad earth? Nothing obvious that I can see..

CB350/400 / Horn

Quick Q. Battery is down a bit - to @11V . Is this enough to get a sound from the horn?

CB350/400 / Blown fuses
« on: April 03, 2020, 01:53:02 PM »
Gents

Bike nearly complete after a modest refresh, but upon connecting up to battery, it blows fuses - the 15A. Neutral indicator lamp glows momentarily, goes out, fuse blown. Tried two more, even a 35A, still blows!

Guess I may have a short somewhere, but I am hopeless at electrics. I do have a multimeter though. Switchgear and headlamp all came apart, so all those connections in the headlamp shell and within the switchgear came apart. I did label them all though beforehand....

Any clues where to start and how to proceed would be most appreciated.

Many thanks

CB350/400 / Switchgear halves
« on: March 30, 2020, 05:09:00 PM »
Folks

Many thanks for the strobe response - will cogitate and revert....

Next minor issue on the list - Fitting the RH switchgear halves back together after a repaint, it seems there is a bit of trade off between obtaining a nice flush joint between the halves and having a smooth throttle return action when releasing it after twisting ACW for power. I also noted the throttle return wasn't great prior to disassembly....

Thoughts most welcome.

CB350/400 / Strobe

Folks

Strobe required to time 400/4. Any particular recommendations? Plenty on Fleabay for under 20 quid....are they much of a muchness?.

CB350/400 / Paint it black
« on: March 18, 2020, 11:01:13 AM »
Rubbing down and refreshing a few bits for a US import 400/4. Unsure of the original balck finish - matt, satinor gloss, or even something else? for the following

Top yoke
Bottom yoke
Front brake calipers
Instrument mounting brackett - for speedo and rev counter

Satin looks quite good but is it original? Quite like gloss on the calipers.....

CB350/400 / Carb Float bowl O-rings
« on: March 11, 2020, 02:04:13 PM »
Anyone know of the correct size for these things? Where to buy also. Mr Silver only does "kits". Only need the O rings as carbs are done. Could re-use I guess, but would prefer not to. Also, the ones I pulled off seem far too large! Copius amounts of gasket stuff to hold in place perhaps when refitting.

CB350/400 / Exhaust Headers
« on: March 10, 2020, 02:33:15 PM »
Dilemma here for which I think I know the answer if I wanted to do it properly! However, allow me to explain. As with doubtless many others, the exhaust header pipes on the inner bends were pitted and corroded - especially on the inner radii(?) towards the top portion of the header. The rest of the header is in pretty good nick, as is the collector and the silencer.

What I have done so far is this.

Taken an abrasive polycarbide type wheel to remove the surface corrosion and lessen the pits
Took it all back further with 400 wetand dry, then 800, then finish with 1200 to remove any scratches
Bit more with polishing mop and abrasive block
Final finish with T-cut and Autosol.

It's not perfect, but many times better, but of course what I have done in the areas of corrosion is remove the protective chroming - not that there was much there anyways. Appearance wise, not quite the miror finish of the chrome, but again, not too bad. I guess the ideal solution is a rechrome, but its pricey and inconvenient.

Therefore

Anything else I could do to improve the finish?
Anything I can do to protect the now unprotected steel - apart from not ride in the rain! Bearing in mind it does get blinking hot of course - and don't say paint it.

CB350/400 / Shock absorbers etc
« on: March 09, 2020, 02:12:11 PM »
Greetings all

Found this UK forum after being on the US site - Many thanks to Nurse!

Currently restoring a 75 400/4 US import and thinking about replacing the standard shocks. Current thinking is the Ikons are the dogs, but at 350 odd notes, they are not exactly cheap. Nurse pointed me in the direction of TECs. They look original, and seem OK from various write ups.

Your opinion or any alternatives would be most welcome.
