CB750 / Re: Hesitation after @ 4500 rpm

Dave

I am beginning to think the same way. No idea why it should be so as I used super unleaded from the same spot beforehand and all was well. Mind that was some time ago. I'll drain the tank and fill afresh - from another petrol station!

CB750 / Hesitation after @ 4500 rpm

Not a Honda - but I feel you gents may be able to point me in right direction as the solution may be similar for CBs . I have another bike - 78 Kawasaki KZ650 - which has performed wonderfully since restoration a year or so ago. I took it out on Friday and it ran beautifully. Saturday took it out on another spin, but this time filled it up with super unleaded as normal. After that, bike rans fine until you give it some throttle at @ 4500 rpm and it hesitates - somewhat alarmingly lurching as it does so. It tries to go, but hestitates again. Very erratic, very hesistant, will not go above 4500. Below 4500 it seems OK - ish....

Clearly I have though about rubbish in the tank being disturbed when filling up, and then finding its way to the carbs. I took the tank filter off - very clean, and the extra in-line filter between petcock and carbs looks fine and clean. Cleaned plugs - all OK, checked gap - OK, cleaned air screw needles - all OK, fuel line blown through, vacuum take off to petcock is OK, Auto advance lubed up, all seems free moving.

Taking the carbs off and cleaning jets etc. is a royal pain. Has anyone got any other suggestions that I could easily do, and do you feel I am on the right track with the root cause? - rubbish in the carbs bascially. Deeply annoying after it was running so well!

Yes - defo more a matt than a satin finish. I too shook the can for ages, warmed the can in aforesaid bucket of hot water and heated the barrel over the portable gas fire until warm to the touch before spraying. I have since dangled the painted barrel over the gas fire again to cure further  - I dare not use the kitchen oven for fear of retribution - and it seems to have hardened off a little more...we shall see. I am still not impressed with the matt finish nor the not quite black colour though.

On this, I gave the head cover a coat of Plastikote BBQ paint. Better finish, certainly blacker and a little more satin sheen. I'll allow this to cure then compare and contrast. I also bought a can of Plastikote Woodburner paint. Colour seems just the same, but I may try it out on a sample piece of scrap to judge if that is any better.

Gloss finish on the barrel/head of black engines looks awful! A genuine satin finish is fine, but despite the can saying satin it just is not.

Thanks folks - good to confirm things. As an aside I am using PJ1 satin black to recoat the barrels and head after soda-blasting them. I have to say I am not impressed. The colour is more like a flat dark grey, and despite curing in the oven and dangling the part over a portable gas fire, the paint is still very soft when cool. A fingernail scratches it. I may try barbecue paint instead.....

Staedy progress rebuilding the bottom end. New balancer chain on - thanks Oddjob - various seals replaced, crankcases given new coat of paint etc etc.

Both crankcase covers are now also on in preparartion for top end rebuild. However, I did not lube up the new balancer chain before fitting the right hand cover. Does this matter? - as I assume as soon as bike starts up, oil will start thrashing about over the chain anyways?

Parts are away for soda blasting. I did think of using a HT etch primer but as you say Dave there appears to be no fundamental reason to do so. Curing  - I'll hang them over a portable gas fire!

One for Dave maybe....

Can you apply PJ1 onto bare metal? As per previous post, I was thinking of applying a HT (etch?) primer beforehand, but is this truly necessary? What have others done to recoat bare metal barrel/head/cover please?

I have now taken the upper crankcase case back to bare metal. Do I need high temp primer or will UPol or similar etch primer suffice? I have the PJ1 for the head, barrel and cover and perhaps thinking of using it for the upper crankcase also, but wouldn't mind using an etch primer as it is now bare metal.

Thoughts welcome.

Incidentally for the top end bits, I was thinking of vapour blasting back to bare metal then high temp (etch) primer, then PJ1. Bit nervous about the beads in the vapour blasting becoming entrained somewhere - a thorough clean I suppose?

Gents

Counted the chain 3 times and the photo in the manual - I get 72 links

The chain I have bought is as per the pic attached - a DID 219 HTM - 108 links

Timing marks are at 0, 9 and 27th link - though obviously I can mark those up!

When I receive the chain, for sure I will check it against the old one.

Oddjob - Very happy for you to buy the rivet and assemble. Chat later no doubt.

Other Bikes / Re: Carb balancing the old fashioned way

I used 4 milk bottles. Each was half full of food dyed water, piped up to each other and to the vac port on the carb inlet. The trick is to get all 4 levels the same - as then each carb is pulling the same vacuum. Worked very well and very accurate. Just ensure no water gets sucked in to the engine!

Just got a split link with the chain. Rivet links for it seem hard to come by. I'll keep looking.....

Hi Oddjob

Let me consult the manual and I'll get back to you with number of links - or I'll count the old one!

Yes  - I have already bought one, but chat later no doubt.

Many thanks for your help - much appreciated.

Hi Oddjob

It's a 219  - one of these.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/382209546818

Needs to be cut to size, preferably rivet link fitted and mushroomed, then can be fitted when fully assembled - unless Dave says different!
