I see what you mean about grotty - I would be minded to try as you said with the new m/cylinder in place.
If you do a search on here from the search box at the top there are other ways to force out the piston involving a grease gun.

Does your bottom mount have a threaded plate attached or is it a nut & bolt fitting?

Are you talking about fitting washer at the top mount for alignment or the lower fitting where it clamps to the swing arm?
I had to do some spacing at the top using some washers a member (allankelly1) made for me in SS.

Would a difference in float height explain this?

The caps just screw into the HT leads if you have the Caps with a screw in fitting like the originals. this link is for the ones I purchased just realised you are looking at the same item.

Theses were mine plenty of HT length so you can fit them easily, looks like the same supplier except the name Hendler no longer shown.

Good point DR I had to switch the polarity as well to suit the negative earth - can't remeber if I had to change any bullet connectors.

I found some similar ones on e-bay for my 500 they work just fine except the distance between the mounting points was about 5-10 mm shorter. I just fitted a shorort link bracket to make them fit - mine were branded as Hendler from a firm near Uttoxter, Staffs.

Is that a genuine 400 rear damper you have found?
No, they are from Legend Motorcycles. Nice price too currently at £58.45 can't really lose!  ;D

My shockers have a chromed shield on the top section - not sure if they are original or have been replaced in the past mine is a 1978(S) plated version.

CB500/550 / Re: Common wire
« on: April 15, 2024, 09:11:05 AM »
It's the original solenoid but I'm wiring  a new loom myself. It's the black common wire that powers the horn, switches, oil and neutral lights. I've tried attach a photo of the wiring diagram for a cb550  but can't seem to do it.

Not sure what you mean by "I'm wiring a new loom myself" are you fitting a replacement new loom, repairing your existing loom or making a complete replacement loom yourself ?

Are you using the right wiring diagram for your particular build version of the 550?

If you loosen the right bar switch clamp you should be able see the various wires inside the switch and work out if the starter  button is a simple earth or if it sends power to the solenoid when depressed.
