Does this help ?

I've reversed my battery so it fits correctly. The earth strap looks as though it fits on the engine mount nut OK. The positive now reaches the starter solenoid was upside down after some loosening of terminals it's now as it should be. When I come to replace the wiring loom I have no faith in the existing routing so will be on the look out for photos of how it should be routed. Workshop manuals are a very limited sources of such information. Some serious searching is ahead of me - old posts here etc. I guess there isn't a market for rebuild manuals. I take my hat off for those that build a bike from a boxes of parts.

How depressing for me to see such a brilliant restoration it makes me want to almost give up now before I have really started.

I will never ever get close to that as new look on such a grand scale never mind the cost what about the man hours.

Highly polished alloy everywhere gleaming chrome my only consolation is that you will never ever use it outside.

You will be in constant fear of rain and humidity keeping the bike in a heated cocoon 365/24/7.

Envy is a deadly sin I guess..............sigh.

In my opinion it has no real use to replace those lamps with LED's to lighten the electrical load, none of them light for any length of time!
When your oil lamp lights for any length of time while riding you clearly have other problems than the state of the battery or alternator, neutral lights only while stopped, signal lights are only used occasionally, and only light 50% of the time, and the high beam  won't be used for long until one of the other road users complains about getting a headache from your eye splitting headlamp ;) ;)

You raise some good points I might stick with Tungsten. My Jeep has 7  interior lamps that illuminate when you open a door if the engine is not running they stay on for almost 5 minutes I've put LED bulbs to cut down the load.

CB350/400 / CB400F2 Chain Guard 40510-377-000

The chain guard on my bike has been painted black at some time and although it does have a small crease near the end it is quite small so I could go down the re-chrome route if a new one is not available from the UK.

DS & Bertrums are no stock or discontinued aside from CMS is there anyone else that supply replicas?

They are 233 bulbs.  You can get led replacements, but make sure you get coloured bulbs, white led's behind coloured lenses give out a distorted coloured light. Hve a look at the website classiccarleds.

Thanks Mick that's just what I was after.

The bulbs in the Pilot Light Unit are not like ordinary car bulbs - is there a type designation so I can get replacements or even better is there an LED unit that fits & is suitable?

Any links much appreciated please.

CB350/400 / Re: OE versus Pattern?
« on: November 06, 2020, 09:01:22 PM »
In the various dealership car parts departments I have worked in we used to use the description OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer - that implied it was the same part but boxed by the part maker (e.g.Brembo) rather than the vehicle brand (e.g.Mercedes or Vauxhall) however there was a oxymoron here.

Interestingly OE parts were a different (generally much better) specification to a manufacturers replacement part supplied as a service part or for spares. e.g, back when they were new a set of replacement brake pads for a Carlton were around £80 for a set of fronts branded as AC Delco. An OE set of front brake pads from Vauxhall were over £200! They marketed the AC Delco brand to compete on price with aftermarket brands but they were an inferior specification to the parts originally fitted in the factory. The reason for higher specification OE was to ensure a new vehicle had a chance of not needing parts replacing until out of warranty.

A rear lamp lens for a Mercedes was boxed as a Mercedes part the OE lamp would have a Mercedes Star stamped on the part. Mercedes were not in the game of diluting their reputation by selling you the same lamp made by Bosch supplied in a MB box. If a MB dealership is found to be selling or fitting  parts not supplied by MB parts based in Milton Keynes even if they were OEM they risk losing the franchise or facing a hefty financial penalty.

Interestingly MB actually lower the price of service items once a model is out of production to avoid losing out to OEM suppliers.

Your battery, in effect, is round the wrong way Ted. The battery terminals should be nearest the frame. I will take a pic of mine in a while.
Edit... Your cables are also around the wrong way and the battery looks much too tall.

Probably the wrong battery came with the bike it was dry charged when I bought it still in the box. I suspect you are right it is too tall as if fitted with the terminals next to the frame they would hit the tube.

I need to know the correct battery type number as original - DS site photo shows type CB12A-A on the casing. I might get lucky and find its just all back to front - certainly my cable runs look weird. My battery is marked as a MF CB12A-A  p/n712121 its 161 Tall.

I can move the Negative cable easily but the Positive  one is quite short not sure where it runs across the frame from the solenoid assuming it is the right lead fitted?

I'm pretty sure the main wiring harness routing is wrong in places as it's clearly very tight in some places with excess in others.

Do it. Avoid nightfall and mud. Have a mirror though as you'll need to look out for the rozzers.

Ah and forgot completely to mention no front brake fitted - all still in boxes with caliper dismantled test ride idea now not an option!

I carried out a COLD compression test this evening (with new gauge) all four were 110 psi.
The manual says 170 psi when HOT - can't see them rising by 60 psi though.
I guess tomorrow I will have to get it up to temperature and risk another burn mark in the process just to be sure.
After 12 years of not being run the valves will need regrinding at the very very least.

CB350/400 / 400/4 Battery Location question ?
« on: November 06, 2020, 08:03:53 PM »
The battery connections on my bike were as follows when I bought her- the positive cable is nearest the fuel tank, the earth cable is nearest the rear wheel. The battery that came with the bike has the positive terminal as in the photo.

The live terminal is very close to the air cleaner frame/box where it could easily short out - I have inserted a small rubber pad for safety to tery to push the terminal away.

is there something missing to prevent this or is it not the right battery or cable layout?

When I took the clutch cover off my 250 Dream back in the late 60s using the Honda T bar tool most had to be drilled out! I fitted new screws from Honda dealer 18 months later they were all stuck fast again. I was dreading taking the cover off my 400/4 but using a cordless impact driver they all came out. - huge relief.
