Thanks again Deano, I didn't know Nurse Julie had a site, so that will be very useful for the future. This engine was fully stripped to rebuild by PO some 3,000 miles/4 years ago so not expecting too much hastle with bolts etc. I think at the time some seals and "O" ring changes were overlooked, hence my strip down now. I'm part way into the strip down now, Seat and Tank off, Carbs and coils off, Breather cover and tappet covers off, tappets slackened to reduce cover stress when camshaft cover is removed. Side tracked to remove oil filter and drain sump, but found the Oil filter centre bolt will not shift. I've tried using a 6 sided socket and extension bar, plus tapping the wrench while under load without result. Just ordered a 12mm SnapOn Flank Drive socket to use on my air driven impact wrench and considering whether to warm the area slightly before impacting. Many thanks Dennis

Hey Deano, thanks - thats brill It makes the job so much easier to know these things in adavance. Am I right in assuming that the starter motor "O" ring is a seperate item, would you know if Nurse Julie can supply this as well. ? Thanks for all your help. Dennis

Hi Deano400, and Laverda Dave Wow, thats a very comprehensive list of "O" rings, seals and bearings. Thanks. Regarding the Engine/Trans unit only, is it possible from your research to tease out and say for instance: 1. Which items are included in the Full Engine Gasket Set. 2. Which items are ordered in individual "other kits". (Oil pump kit as Laverda Dave mentioned) 3. Which items identified not available in kit form and only on individual order. ? Many thanks Dennis

Hi guys, I am looking and wondering if there is a reference list to cover all the "O" rings and seals needed for the Engine Trans unit. I am trying not to make assumptions about what is included/ excluded in gasket sets etc, although there is a sealed bag full of "O" rings. From all the rebuilds you have carried out between you, there is lot of experience of Which things are included AND Which things need to be ordered seperately. There are odd things like the starter motor O ring etc I wanted to include The bike I purchase recently has a few minor oil leaks to deal with, so I have decide to do a full strip and inspection so I know the full internal condition. To have this info available woud be most helpful prior to ordering, also knowing best where they can be obtained and which brands are reliable and those to avoid. Cheers Dennis

Welcome to the forum Ben from another Newbie, who recently purchased a 1979 CB400/4.
Just starting to sort out my project plan of works.

Hi Nurse Julie I've just finished reading through this thread and I have to say you made an excellent job of the whole project. It's an absolute credit to you. I hope you have many years of safe travels on it. All the best, Michael
Thank you Michael. I couldn't have done it without help from him indoors, Graham (Trigger). She rides like a dream and the engine really is fantastic... The bike is no show bike by any means but she's a riders bike which is all I'm ever really interested in. I like all my bikes to look nice but its the pleasure of riding and reliability that outweighs everything else for me 😊😊😊.
Hi Julie, Thanks for your welcome to me as a Newbie, and please add my congratulations to yourself and Trigger and to all that has been said above by others on this major project. It has been a very engaging one to follow, with superb photos and descriptions, and I share your joy at the end. After a short ominous engine noise on my newly purchased bike the other day, I think I may have to do a full strip/inspection to investigate if anything is in need of attention and for peace of mind, so your project is a perfect template on what to look out for on these super 400f engines. Cheers Dennis PS. What brand of oil did you settle on please. ?

On the 400/4, can anyone confirm the oil pressure light switch and oil pump casing thread size please ? Thanks Dennis

When I fitted the oil guage to my CR750 Rep, I used a 'tee' off the oil pressure switch pickup point - its a few years since I did it so can't remember gallery thread for the 'tee' but think I searched the US SOHC site. Then worked back from the guage for fittings/pipe
Many thanks Phil I plan to have a good look around the space and clearance situation today, both near the o/p switch and the points cover. Plus placement of the gauge, possibly opposite the A/F ratio gauge. Cheers Dennis

Nice machines. 👍
Please tell me that you're going to improve the 400 rear brake pedal. I couldn't live with that Allen bolt sticking out! 😣
Hi taysidedragon, well spotted. Yes its on the " to do" list, but at least its solid for now until i can source a nice replacement. Any suggestions from your experience please
I would try and get a longer knurled bar made to replace the pedal that's too short.
For carb balancing I use the Morgan Carbtune set. Well damped and accurate. Thanks
Dennis
Many thanks for the info Gareth. I will have a look at the Morgan set. The pedal if on my “to do” list for attention. Cheers Dennis

On a 400 there is not room to put anything extra where the pressure switch is(on oil pump under sprocket cover) so you need to drill and tap the screwed in plug under the points cover, just so happens i took one out of a 500 engine on Sunday you can have for post
Hi Bryan, thank you for your info and help, thats very kind of you. I will PM you and make some arrangements. Cheers Dennis

Warning light extinguishes at approximately 15 psi and maximum pressure is capped at around 60 psi, estimated slightly as I think they may quote 59.something in manuals.
It'll dump excess out the relief valve to avoid risk to oil pump drive, as most engine arrangements do.
Flow is, pickup, pump, floods filter housing, exits through filter element centre via main bolt to internal galleries. Pressure relief also built in to filter bolt in case of filter blocking, so feed is maintained with unfiltered.
Barrel feed route to head has resistance in line to maintain crankshaft plain bearings in high pressure environment, with cam etc at low pressure open bath type oiling and spray bars for wetting effectively.
Gee thanks K2-K6 thats great info I have been thinking about fitting an Oil pressure gauge and that gives me a good idea of the scale range to use. I'm thinking about picking up the feed from the pressure switch point but still retaining the switch, if I can find a suitable union/connection. I need to have a look what space is available tomorrow and the sizes of electrical senders. Regards Dennis

Best vacuum gauges in my opinion, and most like original Honda, are Sealey and cost about £135 on ebay plus come with all adaptors. There are similar looking ones costing about £50 but the actual gauges are cheap and will not be as accurate.
Hi Bryan, thanks for your input on that, I will have a look and add it to the list Also one other item I was loooking for was a correctly sized Magnetic SUMP Drain Plug, if anyone can help please.Cheers Dennis

500 vucuum guage inlet screws are 5mm - would imagine same for 400 - Nurse Julie does seals for all the SOHC cam fours (upgraded) No ides of best guages as my dad made my set up in work 49 years ago - still working great! Thanks Dad!
Hi Phil, thanks for your help with those, I will make a note when I do my Internet searches for guages and may need to replace O rings when I check the valve clearances. I forgot to add to my list - Rear sprocket - nothing fancy, just well engineered and durable, what do regard as best/good value The chain is new and the g/box sprocket v.good. Thanks Dennis
