Hi, Alex.

As promised, mirror dimensions.

This is amazing, thank you for that!

I used the screw-in type with a O-ring seal.

Problem is, this is my first bike, so not really sure how its supposed to ride with proper compression. I took it out today, and had it going 150 km/h with more juice to spare, so it doesn't really seem like it has lost any energy. Maybe I should return the compression tester :(

It's a no name brand I think. You can see the tester here: https://www.vidaxl.dk/e/kompression-tester-til-benzinmotorer/8718475816249.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw4eaJBhDMARIsANhrQAC0pyvjfPzjCYf-QU30mMlAD0I0k3xOdMCAamOyiaTZqdA8_jaue1kaAh_hEALw_wcB

I do have an oil leak on each side of the head (the oil galley because of too small O-rings), but that shouldnt affect the results that much, should it? I will try the oil drop trick. Though I could only warm the engine up and get the same results.

Also, do all spark plugs have to be off at once?

I just set the valves, so that should not be it…

No smoke at all. And the motor is running fine at low and high speeds…

Thanks for the help! I think I will try and source and original part. Those extenders, helpful as they would be, are rather unsightly :) I really appreciate the help and links though!

CB500/550 / Low compression but the bike runs fine?
« on: September 09, 2021, 01:06:50 PM »
Hey

Just finished a tune-up of my CB550F2, and carb synced it in the end. My new compression tester just came in the mail today, so wanted to try it out. I am surprised that I get really low compression on all four cylinders though! Between 60-70 on all of them. I tested the bike while it was warm, and had choke and throttle fully open.

I have a clip of the bike idling (warm, as I took it right after the compression test), and it idles well and runs well, and not rough at all. So why the low compression??

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Hey all

I can't find this part, where the side mirror screws into anywhere? My thread is completely stripped, so wanted to get a new part if possible. Anybody knows what it's called?

Absolutely Steve. This is exactly what I need to know!

Did you end up on a 2.5 or 3 O-ring?

Just a quick update question: Since I've just changed the entire gasket set for the top engine, can I take it apart and only substitute the O-rings, or do I have to substitute the whole thing when I take it apart??

Further to the above, I've been through my Ebay purchase history at my O-ring purchases.  Based on the Honda standard thickness of 2.4 and what I bought around that time, they would either have been 2.5mm Viton (which I doubt because it's hardly any thicker at all) or 3.0mm Viton.  I'd say it's 99% definite that I used 3.0mm, which makes sense to me today as a proper thickness upgrade.  And mine definitely didn't leak again up to when I sold it.

But, you would be far better advised by Nurse Julie's experience than my recollections!

I hope this helps.
Brian.

Thank you Brian! I've written Julie on here in a PM, so hopefully I will hear from her soon :)

CB500/550 / CB550F side mirror stem lenght
« on: September 02, 2021, 05:39:28 AM »
Hey all

Just bought what I though was original side mirrors for my Honda CB550F from 1977. Having received them, the stem on the mirror seems much longer than I thought it should be. Can anyone with the original Honda side mirrors tell me (or measure) the stem length of the side mirrors?

Thank you!

5 x 2.4 according to the Parts book in Aladdin's Cave on here.

I used a slightly bigger thickness Viton O rings on my CB550K2, with an aftermarket head gasket from David Silvers, and it never leaked again.

Hope this helps,
Brian.

Hey Brian

So you used a slightly thicker version than the 5x2.4? Or did you use the actual 5x2.4 sizes?

Yes, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out where the air is coming in. It ran perfectly fine before I replaced the top engine seals (where I also cleaned up and restored the carburetors), but after putting it back together, it’s just not running right. Feel like I have checked everything.

Hey all

So having some more trouble with this fickle beast of mine. The model is a CB550F2 1977.

When I rev up the engine, the revs hang in the highs, even though Im idling at around 1100. It does this almost every time I rev up. Also, if I let it fall down completely, and then turn the throttle fast, the engine turns out. Lastly, I got the occasional popping and small explosions in my exhaust.

I have checked that there is no carb leak with some carb spray, and I've also vacuum synced the carbs. The air mixture screw is turned out about two full turns. I tried 1,5 turns as well, but with same result. When I go one turn only on the air mixture screw, the bike doesn't idle, but just goes out. Also, the carbs got cleaned half a year ago.

Lastly, my choker is acting up. Out of nowhere, its sorta stuck in a certain position, and I have to sorta "click" it out of it. I have checked if there is anything physical in the way of it turning freely, but there is not. What could this be?

Here is links to videos illustration all the problems. Somehow I have a feeling they are all interconnected…

Choker not turning freely: https://youtu.be/9xfIopnMSzU

Engine stops when turning throttle fast: https://youtu.be/NTRt5yrF5UQ

Revs doesn't come back down: https://youtu.be/DTc0kpwH6r4

Any help is greatly appreciated!
