CB500/550 / Re: Head is leaking oil again. Again.

I already made sure the head was flat. So an OE set from David Silver or thicker o-rings. Does anyone have a source for usable o-rings. This will be the third time taking the top apart. Would really like to get it right this time!

It's the oil gallery O-Rings, most likely because aftermarket head gaskets are thicker than Honda ones and they don't appear to make the O-rings they supply thicker to compensate for that, so they crush like they should and end up leaking.

OE gasket will solve it unless there is some damage to the surface but then why both ends at the same time?

Thank you for this advice. Sorry for a potentially stupid question (English not being my first language), but what does OE mean? That the gasket follows the original factory specs? Or?

Are you sure its not the end cap O rings that are leaking? they are very, very prone to it.

Just uploaded two pics - one of each side. It seems like its the o-rings that are in each side of the motor. What do you think?

Take a pic of where the leak is and we can advise on the usual suspects, it's too vague saying it just leaks, there are a number of areas prone to leakage and we need to isolate where it's coming from.

Just uploaded two pics. It leaks in each end, making me think maybe its leaking from the o-ring on each side of the engine. But I am not sure if it can be anything else. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I took some photos. It's in each end, but that is the only place the leak is.

ALL newer gasket kits need thicker O rings at the oil feed through head gasket as the new asbestos free head gaskets are thicker, also a common leak is where the brackets the cam cover end caps bolt to are held to the head, there is supposed to be a soft alloy washer between bracket and head

Yeah so me Vesrah kit didn't hold up for long before the leak returned. Do you know of any kit that has thicker O-rings, taking the thicker head gaskets into account?

Hey all

I installed a new gasket and o-ring set the first time I took the top engine apart on my CB550F2 from 1977 . Sourced it from CMS. The bike still leaked oil. So I sourced a Vesrah complete gasket set and put that in instead. The bike is still leaking oil from the top. I have made sure that all surfaces are clean and even, and I even used some extra sealing silicone the second time around to be sure. And still it leaks. I am running out of ideas as to what to do.

Has anyone else had a stubborn leak, that they finally got rid of somehow?

In respect to the Vesrah kit, did you use the o rings that came with the kit? I’m advised to use a 3mm thick o ring for the cylinder head oil valves rather than the standard 2.5mm item?

Yes, I only used sealers and O-rings from the Vesrah kit…

Thanks all for the replies!

In regards to the sealings - I just redid the top engine with the Vesrah gasket kit, and proceeded to drive around 1000 km. within the next week. No leak. So can totally vouch for the usability of the Vesrah kit (I got the complete one).

As to separating top from bottom, I guess it will still be somewhat of a major disassembly again. So with that in mind - as long as Im in there, what would you guys recommend fixing in the bottom end besides primary chain?

CB500/550 / Separating top end from bottom end in one piece?

Hey all

I just found out that I can take the entire motor out of my Honda 550F in one fell swoop, without taking anything apart. That was nice. Now, I am wondering - I restored the top end of my motor, but I would like to replace my primary chain. I don't wanna take the entire top end apart piece by piece again. Is it possible to detach the entire top end in one go, or do I have to separate it piece by piece?

I ended up using a Vesrah complete kit for the 550F, and that solved all my problems. Must've been a faulty kit or faulty installation with the old kit :)

Thanks for the help!

Thank for the reply Tony!

I am a little in doubt of these work for the 550F models - can anyone give a quick look and let me know?

CB500/550 / Source of quality top end gasket kit for CB550F in Europe
« on: June 10, 2021, 09:38:34 AM »
Hey

Just tried fixing a top end oil leak in my CB550F with a gasket kit from eBay. It still leaks oil though, which makes me believe that the gasket kit was not very good. Can anyone recommend a supplier of high quality gasket kits in Europe? Thank you!
