Desperately Seeking!! / Re: CB360-350F-450K Swing Arm Collar Wanted
« on: December 02, 2023, 09:07:29 AM »
Just sitting here hoping to get fed shortly:
333 is the CB350 Four part and according to CMS 52141-333-000 also fits some CB400 fours.

But notice that some CB400 fours call up 52141-369-000.
The 333 version shows holes for grease to come through, the 369 does not show the holes as probably doesn't need them as the grease is fed from S/A nipple.
Maybe otherwise the same.

Hi.  The 333 is listed in my CB360 parts list although I have seen other references to the 369 part too.

My CB360 swing arm does not have nipple, or like the 450/750, a nipple on the end of the through bolt.  I have a post running on the Twins Forum about this and the Tourmax replacement kit.

I hope you enjoyed your meal!

Cheers,

Jerry

450 bolt will not work before you try to find one, I’ll explain better when I’m back in the uk on Sunday

Thanks Ken.  On hold 'till you get back.

Thinking about it....I was wondering whether fitting a grease nipple is likely to be needed as my bikes don't go out in the rain unless I get caught out, so I don't expect to be putting those bearings under any threat.  When the salt goes down, the bikes go to bed until the spring.... I'm a bit of wimp !!.  I did all my crap weather riding back in the '70s

Cheers,

Jerry

Wow!.  Thank you for the quick responses. OK, so the end bearings which are very smooth operating are in themselves resistant to water ingress?  Are they some sort of PTFE sandwich? The IKO needle bearings and the end thrust bearings look like they are made from Stainless Steel

The CB360 does not have a grease nipple so that would require a complete dismantling of the rear end every time greasing is required.  It's is little wonder that they were common failure point.

Maybe I can fit a grease nipple in the middle somehow.  The two halves of the swing arm pressings wrap around and welded to the tube that makes up the pivot, so I would have to drill on the front side.  I have checked and there is not enough space between the tube and the back of the motor to get a grease gun on.  I would have to drill through the pressing and tube near where they are welded together.  That would place it underneath and more accessible.

Will the end bearings allow grease through I wonder.

I was going to use CVJ moly grease as I have a tub of that.  It is supposed to be resistant to water, so that should help.

Any further comments are welcomed.

Cheers,

Jerry

Hi Folks,

I noticed that there was some weave whilst out riding my CB360, so I checked the play in the rear fork and found some movement.  On inspection the bushes were slightly worn, but the collar was quite pitted.

In an attempt to fix this, I purchased a Tourmax (labeled on the pack as SNB-102) Upgrade Kit from Motorcycle Products, their part number 034064.

The kit is nicely made and uses IKO needle bearings and end bearings where the weather seals would be, but it had no weather seals.  The OEM seals won't fit over the end races that they supply.  I considered modifying the OEM seals so they would fit, but their thickness would add to the already correct dimensions of the kit and would cause binding with the Frame mounts...even if you could get it in the space!

I have requested information from Motorcycle Products, but have yet to receive a sensible response.  There appears to no way of contacting Tourmax directly...

In the photo I sent to Motorcycle Products to explain the situation, you can see the issue.  If by any chance the end bearings are actually waterproof, which I doubt, then the problem goes away.

I have put a "Desperately Seeking" message up for the collar, but not holding out much hope as it is a shared part with other models.

Any ideas out there?

Cheers,

Jerry

Desperately Seeking!! / CB360-350F-450K Swing Arm Collar SORTED
« on: December 01, 2023, 01:30:39 PM »
Hi folks,

SORTED

Tourmax Upgrade Kit fitted along with drilling, tapping and fitting a grease nipple.

The Part is 52141-333-000 which seems to be shared with the CB360, CB350Four and CB450K

It seems these are unobtanium.

It seems that the usual suspects are all out of stock.

Fingers crossed,

Jerry

Nigel,

Quite right.  Fine by me, maybe another discussion of similar ilk....petrol as well.  It has always been a big variable depending on where you live...

Maybe not?

Jerry

Ted,

I use semi in my CB360 and CB750 K1 as well and indeed my 2005 CB1300 and that is very new at 18 years old..haha!  No problems yet.  "Semi" is vague prefix on oils.  The actual content is undeclared, on the bottle at least, but might be found on a relevant website.

Currently using "3M" Part Synthetic from Halfords.  JASO and MA2 rated.  Good price, £27.99 for 5 litre bottle.  Ok so far.  CBX is takes over 4l for an oil and filter change, so 5l is useful in that respect.

Cheers,

Jerry

"Returned to Dino" Love that quote, so descriptive.

Lots of comments about leakage using fully synth in old machinery, semi less leakage but is it worth the risk? Might as well stay with Dino oil until it's not practical anymore IMO.

Ken,
I am happy to use part synthetic.  That seems OK

It's this one Jerry http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,14515.0.html there's some intriguing and very in depth record from Jensen in running his 450 over extended period.

I do think the twins generally are in the same category with regard to oil, yes.

Nigel,

That was a long read and some of the stuff went in, but some went through!

The thread is quite old from 2017.  Just wonder what the outcome was....or did I miss a link.

I do know that when I tried a 10/40 on my CBX many years ago.  I had to drain it fairly quickly as to use someone's quote, it was making a bid for freedom out of every seal/gasket.  Returned to dino and it all dried up.  Some comment on using it with new seals and gaskets only makes sense on rebuild though.

Cheers,

Jerry

are ok

what do you use in the Engine of a Black Bomber or should I say what's the best to use......... if there is such a thing Now ?

I feel there's good evidence (significant thread of discussion on here) to use a modern synthetic in these engine.

Concerns about camshaft longevity, supply to that location and the heat with consequent "clagging" in the high heat crankshaft oil passages, then coupled with oil pump type, all have the potential to be helped by one of these oil types.

No its not because its more slippery, but much more about consistency of viscosity and pace of flow given the architecture within it, that's in my view  :)

Nigel,
Interesting about the oil....although this tread is in danger of massive drift!

Do the 250/350/360 engines fall into this synthetic oil category that you are suggesting.  They are very similar as I understand.  Can you pint me to the thread please.

Ash,

Oh dear we have drifted off the thread haven't we.

I don't suppose any one will be interested in my faulty memory.  I did have four CB250s, but maybe only the K3 for a very short while.  I vaguely remember a gold one.

Thank you for the refresh.

Cheers,
Jerry

Ash.

Thank you for those brochure images.  Wow how having such material is so useful. Just shows how time can distort some memories.  My second CB250 was a K2, which I had to do some restoring.  It had the Blue /White tank.  I can't remember the colour of the K0, because it had a Read Titan fairing which I rattle can painted an awful yellow and brown scheme.  I do have pictures of that, but not when I first got it.  Third CB250 was a K3...burgundy I think.  All such a long time ago....sigh!

Cheers,
Jerry

My CB175 was brand new.  My father was the guarantor.  I kept it for about 9 months, then chopped it in for CB250 K0 1968.  A straight swap I think.  I just kept paying the loan off.  The 250 "K0"  (no K0 then it was just CB250) was a quick bike...before Soichiro detuned them from 33 down to 27hp with the K1....If I remember correctly.  No helmet law then!

Cheers,

Here's my K reg.  Old square format 120 photo.  Bike long gone, but memories attached

Hi folks,

Thanks for the help and to Ash for finding something suitable.

Problem solved.  I have modified the grip a little as it was a few mm short and it is now painted.

If anyone ever comes across a nice shiny chrome one I would be very pleased to have a look.

Cheers,

Jerry
