CB350/400 / Oil change after rebuild?
« on: September 05, 2023, 11:19:56 AM »
Is it advisable to change the oil soon after a full engine rebuild or only when it has done a few hundred miles? I'd be interested to know thoughts on this.
(I was going to make sure there was oil pressure before starting up)
With all of the rebuild gunk etc etc, was wondering if it was a sensible precaution.....

This girl is pretty amazing - she seems to be able to do most parts of a restoration herself:

I think she has a goal to restore 100 bikes!!!

CB350/400 / 400 Advance Unit
« on: August 25, 2023, 04:22:57 PM »
Hopefully an easy reply to this one - what is the orientation of the cam sleeve relative to the timing marks. There is a line on the edge of the cam but I forgot to make  note of which way round it went.
(oh, and if anyone has just the backplate going spare (part with the marks on) - I'll buy it!)

CB350/400 / Oil filter bolt / relief valve

Ken kindly sent new innards for my bolt that is obviously a pattern part.

As you will see the old 'cap' is deformed and is about 0.4mm smaller in diameter than an original (Original parts on the right).
The spring is also a little weaker (longer but thinner gauge)
When fitting the replacement cap to the old bolt, it didn't drop in all the way and I discovered there were burrs on the inside of the bore.
So, I can only assume the cap wasn't working well and was  either jamming in the bore or being worn down by the burrs. This may explain how some of the ring debris got puumped around the oilways.
A reamer has cleaned up the inside and the cap is a decent fit with no snagging. So, it is defintely worth checking the operation of these replacement parts.....

CB350/400 / 400 barrel 'O' rings
« on: August 23, 2023, 06:49:06 PM »
Do the large 'o' rings that go between the barrels and the upper crankcase move into position when the barrels / head are snugged down - I ask as I can't see a way of keeping them in their grooves.

CB350/400 / Oil flow schematic
« on: August 16, 2023, 05:27:26 PM »
Is there a diagram showing the flow of oil in the 400 like the one that is available for the 750? I don't seem to be able to find one.

The reason I ask is I'm trying to understand how so much metal got pumped around the original engine rather than the filter / strainer stopping most of it.
Does all oil go through the filter? Or does some bypass it?
It was highlighted by the fact that the oil restrictors for the head had half of the holes blocked on one of them with tiny metal fragments.....

CB350/400 / Cam sprockets

Rummaging for parts to finish off my engine rebuild I discovered I have 2 different types of cam sprocket - is one later or earlier than the other?

CB350/400 / Cam chain tensioner.....
« on: August 08, 2023, 05:54:27 PM »
Got ready to assemble crankcases and noticed the thread for the camchain tensioner was huge and mullered. How any PO could make it so bad?
Anyway, It appeared to be a (poor) 10mm x 1.5 thread so re-tapped and then made a suitable sleeve for the 6mm tensioner bolt. It feels secure, anyway

Of course, the tensioner thread is now little too short but as I'm about to make some new tensioner bolts, I'll make one a little longer. I'll make a small recess for an O-ring before it gets an application of Loctite.
Is there a reason the locking part of the tensioner is M8 - ie a larger thread?

CB350/400 / 400 primary drive cush rubber

Does one apply any grease (maybe assembly lube?) to these to assist fitment or just a good dollop of oil?

CB350/400 / Bearing Manufacturer choice
« on: August 06, 2023, 05:56:14 PM »
Is there much to choose between SKF, NTN etc when selecting new bearings for the primary shaft on a 400/4. I'm not trying to get the cheapest just decent bearings. I notice that some NTN bearings are made in Taiwan rather than Japan - this maybe irrelevant......

CB350/400 / 400 crankcases....
« on: July 28, 2023, 03:51:58 PM »
I maybe overthinking things but whilst platigauging the crank shells, I noticed that the shells sit everso slightly proud of the half bore. As an experiment, I used a little plastigauge on the mating surface next to where the crank shells fit. Torqued down (without the crank) and then revealed the result.
What would you expect to find?
