CB350/400 / Oil seals
« on: July 25, 2023, 01:05:39 PM »
Does one tend to fit R21 or R23 type oil seals (single and double lipped respectively) on engine rebuilds?

Desperately Seeking!! / Brown shells (pair) 13316-333-003 for 400/4
« on: July 25, 2023, 09:17:09 AM »
I would like to test my theory and see if the brown shells are what I need for my engine build.
If anyone has a pair I can 'borrow' (or buy) then I will add a set to my order from Webike.
(The shells will be assembled with plastigauge and not run!!)

CB350/400 / 400/4 Main crank shells
« on: July 17, 2023, 06:26:54 PM »
Anyone got a good source for main shells B (brown) 13316-333-003
I'm assuming that A shells (black) are NLA - I have 2 part numbers for this 13314-333-003 & 13315-333-003 - anyone know the difference?

My jaw dropped to the floor when I check the price @ DS - £195.00 for a set of 10 !!!

CB350/400 / 400/4 main bearing shells
« on: June 22, 2023, 04:36:26 PM »
Looking at my engine in many pieces, am I right in thinking that if I can find no distinguishing marks on the existing bearing shells, then I need to reassemble the crankcases and then use a bore gauge to find the diameter of the bore in which the shells fit? That measurement together with the journal diameter should then allow me to purchase the correct shells (?). Or is there a better way?

Out & About / Banbury Run
« on: June 21, 2023, 01:13:25 PM »
I didn't take many photos of the day last Sunday but this little beauty was one of my favourites. Sounded like a small car! About as rare as they come.....
(It is in Sammy Millers museum, BTW and was being ridden by Sammy himself)

CB350/400 / 400/4 primary chain
« on: June 20, 2023, 06:35:32 PM »
I have been trying to find the reference to the alternative primary chain. Is this the correct one?
https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/en/kawasaki-parts/920571011
(I find searching on this forum a little difficult!)

Apart from the primary gear cush rubbers, is there anything that is sensible to replace on the rebuild? (I have all of the camchain parts etc)

Tricks & Tips / Any tips for cleaning carbon off pistons?
« on: June 19, 2023, 06:52:51 PM »
I now have certain items off being cleaned and painted and thought about cleaning up the pistons I am going to use. Anyone got a tip that worked?  A magic dip they used?  ;)

CB350/400 / 400/4 bore sizes?
« on: June 14, 2023, 07:50:50 PM »
Are the bores on a 400/4 (standard) 51mm? Or is that approximate?

42
Ideally looking for somewhere in the south-east to fettle the bores on the spare 400/4 engine I have.
(I will also consider packing up and sending off to somewhere recommended....)
I also have a spare NOS set of barrels that needs a fin welding in......

Any recommendations?

CB350/400 / Duff 400/4 Engine! - Matt
« on: June 07, 2023, 04:48:11 PM »
Well I  started to dismantle the project 400/4 I have and the pressing issue is the engine. I briefley started it up (yes it sort of ran) but sounded like a bag of nails and so I decided that it needed pulling apart. The noise was not just chain rattle but also something quite metallic.
As you can see, the cylinder head has some pretty nasty scoring at one end of the camshaft.

I have not extensively inspected the head yet but is this u/s?

The next issue was when the barrels came off. You will see that No.2 has a broken ring but I have yet to find the missing section of the ring! Looking at the edge of the piston I suspect that this was broken when the barrels were fitted by the previous owner.

No doubt I'll find it in the bottom of the engine case with some other bits of metal!!

CB350/400 / B**tard castellated clutch nut....
« on: May 31, 2023, 06:27:52 PM »
I've not had one like this before and I bet the PO did something to it! (The clutch cover was literally glued on with some solid stuff either side of a gasket!) I have used heat, penetrating oil, air impact driver and even a 2ft breaker bar and it won't budge. (and yes, I've managed to 'spoil' the clutch backplate!) Before I attempt to drill the nut to then break it any other trick I can try?
