I suppose it will depend on the size of the helicoil. I have a sump plug repair kit that allows you to drill out the original thread, re-tap with supplied taps and then replace with an over size sump plug (again supplied in the kit) If you don't get anywhere near to you, happy to repair for the cost of postage back to you...

Yep, I'll own up to that. Regularly do it on the non touch screen PC and have also been spotted trying it with the newspaper recently 🤣🤣🤣🤣

On a newspaper! Awesome!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Bryan , when you say advancers, does that mean the cam AND the weights/springs?

Ian, I have done that on my computer screen when tired - it's not a touch screen!!  ::)

Well, after the kind supply from Deano400 and a decent kick start arm and a little more welly, the kick start works. The 'original' I had was wrong and the splines were not correct and worn. As TrickyMicky says, on the ramp, it needs loads of effort.
Happy to proceed and now only have to bench sync carbs, await front brake caliper and do a nut and bolt check and were ready to fire her up....

Thanks Ted, I couldn't remember the thread but your link reminded me. As the electric start works AOK, gears select AOK and kick start works on clutch disengagement, I'm going to risk putting oil in the bike and carrying on. I'm of the opinion that the 'dry' build is just creating too much friction.......possibly!  ???

Ted, what about polishing it and then using a clear cerakote?

Surely, if the kicks starts works with the clutch disengaged and it spins the the clutch basket, then I would have thought the issue was somewhere with the clutch.
I'm just trying to understand where the issue might be before I dismantle yet again...

CB350/400 / Kick start woes....
« on: November 11, 2023, 10:51:16 AM »
I have been deliberating over this topic and before I go much further, I would appreciate some thoughts!
Engine in and various ancillaries installed. Now with the fixed starter switch, I can turn the engine over with ease.
The problem comes trying to use the kick start. With the clutch engaged and the gearbox in neutral, the kick start appears to be locked. Disengage the clutch and the kick start works (but obviously not turning the crank!) Bike is still on my bike lift.

I have had the clutch basket off a few times and can't see where the issue may be.

Any thoughts?

Ken, I did see that a while ago when you posted it. Excellent idea and I'll do something similar, depending on which Humbrol paints are to hand....

Now apart! It required some effort and now needs a serious clean....

Should one be able to dismantle the advance/retard unit? My spare unit is really stiff and the cam section seems to be reluctant to withdraw from the plate.
