CB750 / Oil leak sussed (hopefully)
« on: May 22, 2015, 08:02:06 PM »
After the engine going in and out three times now I have finally got to the bottom of the latest oil leak and it isn't pretty.
In the past the cam chain has been slopping about something chronic in the tunnel, in fact there is evidence it has probably snapped at some stage. There is a massive groove on both sides of the tunnel resulting in a hole that someone has tried to fix with what looks like Araldite.
Number four piston has a slight chunk out of the top of it, nothing serious, just a nick and number one piston is a new one which suggest a valve to piston get together. The slipper is new as are the roller wheels on the tensioner and also the cam chain looks new. There is also a new can carrier for some reason.

Anyway, if you are of a weak disposition look away now.

A bit of wear me thinks.

Yep, definitely wear.

Araldite failing in it's repair task.

Luckily I got hold of another set of barrels so it is quite an easy fix. (he says)

If this doesn't sort out the oil leaks I give up.

Just beware regarding the old tax disc. A few people have been done by the bobbies for displaying an out of date disc. Even though we are electronic now.
They would have to be a right jobsworth to bother with that, it's not as if I forgot to re-tax it 42 years ago.

CB500/550 / Classic Mechanics

There's a CB550 in this month's Classic Mechanics if anyone fancies a gander.

Thanks for all the encouragement, it's difficult to stay enthused sometimes.
What makes it worse is that there is an empty skip next door that I keep looking at!!!  :-\

Thanks Dennis.
Unfortunately the oil nightmare continues.
It seems that as soon as I stop one leak it starts somewhere else.
This time it is oozing oil out of the lower part of the barrel between two and three. Someone has glued a piece of rubber block in the hole which I totally missed when cleaning up the engine, I didn't take the barrels off as the leakdown test I did only showed leaking exhaust valves so I only took the head off and re-lapped the valves and replaced the stem seals.
I am assuming that the cam-chain has worn through the barrels at some stage and Mr. Bodge has come to the rescue!!!!
I am lucky in that a friend of mine has a spare set of barrels and pistons in good order that he has given me, DS want £1800 for a new set.

Oh well, this engine out malarkey is a breeze now, I am becoming an expert. A pity I am not an expert in spotting all these pitfalls BEFORE building the thing and sticking "I've finished" pictures all over the web.  :-[

Love the Aug 72 tax disk.

I'm sitting here looking at my Dec 72 tax disk that I bought during the winter. All I need now is a decent tax disk holder to put it in!
I just got printed the tax disc from a Google image and got a tax disc holder for about £2 through eBay.

Thanks Pete, I am rather pleased with it now.

Thank you for that.
If it stops raining long enough I will take it for a spin. I had forgotten what they are like to ride and I am learning to look and think a long way ahead so I can slow down a bit (or brake as it is sometimes known).
Good fun though and as soon as you get going they suddenly become normal to ride, great fun.  :)

Sorry about the pictures, don't know what's happened there, they look a bit odd.  ???

..at least for now. Not a restoration, more of a tidy up. I still need to do something with the seat, I am making a stencil for the back to put a Honda logo on it but for now it's done and no more oil leaks (I hope).

Sorry if I have "over-pictured" the thread but I thought I might as well make the most of the post, as it were.

Your not wrong there Roy. I once heard of a mod where the frame tubes were cut above the engine and made into bolt on rails.
Don't ask me how, when or where, it is something I seem to remember way back when.

Whizzed the cam carriers off today and sure enough one of the penny washer type seals was leaking, there is oil all over #3 spark plug area and is was running down and out from between the lower fins of the barrels.
Major lesson learned, always renew seals on a 44 year old bike!!!!!
I seem to remember that these came with the gaskets sets when I had my K6 in the 70s but obviously there is more money to be made by selling them separately now, or am I being cynical.  ::)
I have ordered some new ones from DS, should I coat them with some ThreeBond (other sealants are available) when I fit them?
As usual, any info gratefully accepted.

Thank you, I will see if DS has them, unless you know of somewhere else.

I am suspecting the penny washer seals so the motor is coming out again to check it out. Can these be obtained separately as they weren't in the last gasket set I had.

Thanks Dennis, the wood screw idea worked brilliantly, put a new seal in and bingo, no leak.

Trouble now is I took it for the MOT, about a 10 mile round trip and there is oil coming out from somewhere near the bottom of the barrels, lots of oil. I thought maybe base gasket but the bottom four or five barrel fins are covered in oil at the front only and I can't think how the oil could travel up from the base gasket.
I read somewhere that the four round oil seals under the cam carriers should have sealant on them but I just put them in dry. If they let oil through where would it come out?

I am going to have to take the engine back out to sort this but it would be nice to have a head start so I can figure out what has gone pear-shaped.
"Do it right first time" comes the cry.  :-[

Oh, it passed the MOT though. :)
