CB750 / finned exhaust clamps
« on: July 15, 2011, 09:05:10 PM »
Is there any well trodden path with these?

Mine are letting the bike down really.

I cant seem to find any more, and i assume there all rusty by now anyway.

Can they be successfuly re-chromed? Or, do people paint them?

CB750 / Hondastyle fairing
« on: July 10, 2011, 07:56:42 PM »
After all the grief with the front brake, its all back together with the fairing re-painted. Could do with a new sticker for it though.

No questions from me this time, just pics :)

CB750 / Front brakes.
« on: July 05, 2011, 06:50:13 PM »
I had to take the lines of my front brake. After i re-fitted and bled it, it felt crap. Could get the lever all the way back to the bar. Dont know what they were like before though, never ridden it and didnt notice.

Found one of the hoses had a split outer so ive ordered new ones from hel.

Took the caliper apart and it was all a bit stuck, after cleaning it all up i found the piston is very poor. Very corroded right where the seal would be.

Are there any new replacements? Its an F1 and has a bigger piston, 42.8mm or there abouts.

I have another caliper but it has a smaller piston. Its not great either, but if this is also 750 i might be able to get a new piston. Is this my only option, or are the bigger ones available?

I might see if the engineers in work could turn me up a new one from stainless (i assume aluminium is no good?) as a last resort.

Also, thinking about the master cylinder. Is there any way to check this? I want to get all the parts ready so i can re-fit everything in one go at the weekend.
Could the master cylinder seals be why the lever felt soft and could come back to the bars?

Could i test it by putting a solid bolt in the outlet and see how it feels? I guess it sould be nice and solid, if not, theres a problem?

Misc / Open / Where can i get...?
« on: June 28, 2011, 10:23:00 PM »
A few general queries so put them in here.

I need a few things soon but have no idea where to get them.

First, cb750 F1 seat side trims, i guess these arent available, is there anything close about?
My hondastyle fairing (rickman) has a scratch in the screen, any tips on getting it out, or are they available? I did find a shop someplace that sold them, but there are different types and i dont know which is which.
I also need some 1" wide self adhesive foam, about 1mm thick, to stick to the fairing between it and the screen, is this available?
And lastly, it has a honda sticker, sort of lozenge shape. Anyone sell these?

Thanks.

CB750 / Carb jets
« on: June 26, 2011, 06:03:26 PM »
Sorry, more questions from the newbie ::)

Decided to take my carbs apart. They have obviously been apart before, and i suspected they were all over the place.

I was right  ;D

Cleaned everything out and no blockages. One float valve was a little sticky, but i had a new spare.

The top grommet seals in the top caps weret seated right which im sure was slightly effecting the way they shut. All sorted now though.
Float levels were all over the place, but all correct now.

The last thing, and the thing im asking about, is the needle jets.

The actual needle jets were located on the 5th? setting, holding the needle up highest. Ive put them onto the middle ring, as standard, but im not sure if the 5th ring placement was intentional.
I have 132.5 jets in it.
These will richen it up right, and lifting the needles as i have will richen it more wont it.
Any thoughts?

((((EDIT to say, by moving the needle to the middle setting ive actualy lowered the needle, that'l lean it a little wont it, not richen it.))))

Secondly, the jets themselves. 132.5, as i say, apart from one, which is 152.5!!!

I have a spare set of incomplete carbs. These have a set of 116 jets in. Should i use these, get another 132.5, or something else?

The bike has pod filters (i have the origional air box though) and an aftermarket 4-1.

The last thing is the jet holders, the tubes with all the little holes..The ones on the bike, with the 132.5 jets, have very small holes for the first 2, the other 3 are slightly larger. On the holders with the 116 jets, these first 2 holes are pretty much the same size as the other 3.
Whats the difference with these?

Oh, i forgot, one other thing too.
There are little tubes linking the carbs together (not the fuel tubes). Carbs 1/2 are joined and carbs 3/4 are joined. However, where the throttle return spring is the pipes are open. Should these also have a loop of tube joining them?

Thanks, ill get this think purring eventualy :)

CB750 / Oil, oil pumps and primary chains
« on: June 22, 2011, 08:41:41 PM »
Thought i'd put this is a new topic.

Continuing my 'rattle' issue, i dropped the sump pan and investigated a little.

First off though, the oil sitution seems a little odd to me. Im new to all this though.

I drained the oil cold (i know, but the petrol tank was off and i was impatient).

Oil tank dipstick read about 1" above minimum.

I drained about 2 liters of oil from the engine (didnt drain the tank).

How much oil should be in the case? Manual says 3.5 liters of oil for oil change, seems about right for my total, but shouldnt it be mainly in the tank, reading higher on the dipstick? Engine was last run last night for about 10 mins. Been run for about 10 mins most nights over the last week.

Next thing is the oil seems very thin to me. Clean though. Sort of single cream consistancy. Seems thin for either 10/40 or 20/40.
I dont know what oil is in it though. Smells a little too, not 100% sure if it smells a bit like petrol, but its a bit fumey. Possible for petrol to get into the case?
Was a little bit of crap in the pan, but nothing major. Looks like little bits of scraped off gasket, probably from previous rebuild. Nothing that concerns me too much.

I was going to pull the oil pump anyway, check it over. Make sure the check valve is ok etc. Any reason why i shouldnt?

Now, the primary chain. Took a measurement to the chain adjuster. 69.4mm. Got to love digital callipers 8)
JUST within spec. Ok to leave it for now? Its alot of wrk to change isnt it. Ok to leave it untill winter, maybe 1000 miles tops, or need doing now? Tensioner doesnt seem to have an awful lot of resistance/presure, pretty easy to pull back down. Ive no idea how much tension there should be though.

All looks nice up inside there though.

Thats more writing than i expected, so to sumerise...

1, distribution of oil between tank/sump ok, or odd?
2, possible for petrol to leak down?
3, primary chain, be ok for a bit, or do now!
4, oil pump, strip and check, or leave? Sort of depends on the answer to 1 really, is it scavenging properly.

Thanks :)
Wish i hadnt spent the last 17 years purely messing with cars now, might know a bit more about bike engines ::)

CB750 / Clutch rattle
« on: June 20, 2011, 09:15:03 PM »
Whats the deal?

Mine rattles alot, quite loud!

Not used to bike engines, or chain driven cams etc so i adjusted the cam chain and checked the tappets to make sure neither of those were rattling (they werent).

Havent checked the primary chain yet but will do.

So, assuming all thats left is clutch rattle, how loud should it be?

Ive been told they all do, but is there any way to reduce it? I do have a spare new clutch. Why does the rattle not go when you pull the clutch lever?

I have heard brief mention about using a goldwing clutch plate to reduce rattle, but thats all the info i have. Anyone else shed any light on this?

CB750 / Wont go into neutral when running.
« on: June 15, 2011, 10:50:54 PM »
Got my cb750 home tonight. Cant ride it as neither me, or the bike, are legal yet.
Rode it up the drive and all seems well, but it wont go into neutral with the engine running.

Its not been ridden for a year or more and has only run for about 5 mins in the last year.

Clutch seems fine, select 1st and it will pull away lovely. I can select second with the engine running (bike stationary) but it doesnt always like it.
Cant get it into neutral though. Turn it off and it changes gear and goes into neutral just fine.

Any ideas? Could it just be because its not been used recently?

I cant really test ride it as i dont have my license yet.

Thanks.

Hi, my name is Graeme, i have recently bought a 1976 cb750F1 cafe racer so thought i'd register.
Bike is pretty sorted but will no doubt throw up the odd issue now and then. Im a novice with these, and bikes in general really, not ridden since i was 78 (33 now).
Pretty handy with the spanners though so will be nice to have another play thing to tinker with.

Bike isnt at my place yet as i dont have my license yet :(

Passed my theory last tuesday though, have my CBT on sunday, then i can book my modules.
Should be fine, i used to ride alot, but this will be my first big bike.

Anyhow, thats me :)
