Misc / Open / Re: SOH registration prefix...
« on: January 08, 2014, 12:20:58 PM »
Its the 2nd and 3rd letter that depict the area code, in this case OH would be Birmingham. My 500/4 was uk registered in 2012 and carries WWE... as the start of the reg no. WE being Sheffield and this fits with the location of the chap I bought the bike from who registered it.

A few years back I got my landrover serries IIa age changed from its then current reg no. to an age related one basically to capitalise on the tax exempt status that had just come into force and this was done at the Trafford office in Manchester and I was subsequently was issued with GVR... VR being Manchester.

So it does tie up that the local offices do, well did as they all closed in December. use area codes when they could.

No idea how things will pan out not that its all being run from Swansea. Took them 3 months to send me my log book

Hope that makes sense

Hi Mike, if you dont get sorted via Bryan try Halfords, they do a 75 piece copper washer kit for £7.99, I've used them without any problems

Misc / Open / Re: SOHC UK meet up?
« on: December 30, 2013, 09:47:48 AM »
Maybe what we need is to set up a members map? that way we would have a better chance of a meet up as it would be a reasonably local event and that might lead to meets on a regular basis too? and who knows these may lead to larger meets if these take off?

CB500/550 / ebay scam?
« on: December 01, 2013, 01:44:08 PM »
Hi Guys, thought you might be interested in this one, I bought my 500 four off eBay back in September from a nice chap over in Rotherham, and whilst browsing on eBay the other night (as you do) an advert caught my eye which turned out to be my bike. The advert and pic were the same as when i had bid on the bike in September. However it wasn't posted by same guy who sold it me.
The seller stated that they were selling it for someone else and all contact should be made via their email address.
I emailed the person who posted the ad pointing out that they were advertising my bike and requested the pic be removed and the ad changed. I never got a reply but the posting did disappear the following day.... I felt sorry the the 2 guys who had already bid on it.

I fully understand the reasoning behind going for the modern option but think going for a classic tyre would the way to go, after all they are still considered decent tyres especially the TT100's which proved themselves at the TT. Thanks for the links BTW, i looked at these earlier and thought they might be worth considering.
Anybody know what was fitted originally? Although I'm keen to keep things traditional, I'm not averse to change if its for the better.

I've been having a think about changing the tyres on mine recently, they both look ok and have decent tread depth but I'm unsure as to how good they are, only having had the bike for a month or so.
The front is a Kenda Challenger 100/90-19 and the rear is a Cheng Shin C289 MN90-18 (4.00-18) The rear looks in proportion but to be honest the front does look a bit wide for the rim

The workshop manual states the original spec to be Front 3.15-19 or 3.25-19 and Rear 3.50-18

I'm getting a bit of vibration through the handle bars even though I've rebuilt the forks and stripped down the stearing head and cleaned up the bearings etc. As the ball race bearings looked in good condition i have retained them for the time being, perhaps changing to taper would have been a better option. But will see how we go. Perhaps the tyres could be the cause?

The Avon and Dunlop options look and sound great but does the modern style not detract from the classic lines on the bike?

No worries Mick, it was worth a try anyway. The springs are well within tolerance, but must be tired. Will look for replacements in due course.

Had a go this morning and no difference, easiest way to see whats actually happening is to pull back on the bars while its on the stand and the forks extend to their max and knock as I assume the damper rod is still hitting the top of the damper although its so hard to pin point where the clunk comes from.

There is no tension on the forks when the bike is on the stand and its easy to remove to top cap without fear of it shooting out of the fork tube.

Could it be that the damper and/or springs are shot? and would ATF oil instead of the 10-30's fork oil i've used?

There is no real knocking when rocking the bike backwards and forward so long as you hold the brake on hard. still knocks with the brake on slightly. This might settle down as the pads settle in?

Hi Iain

I did that while the front end was stripped down, athough I have retained the original ball bearing arrangement for now as they also appeared to be in good conditon

CB500/550 / Knocking forks
« on: September 28, 2013, 06:39:54 PM »
My new (to me) CB500 K2 forks knock when you rock the bike backwards and forwards as if the forks are extending to their maximum and the damper rod is  hitting the top of the damper? I have stripped the forks, replaced the seals, refilled them with the correct amount of oil and added 10mm spacers between the top of the springs and damper rod lock nut, just for a bit of added preload as they seemed a little soft, and it still hasn't cured it. All in all the forks appeared to be ok when I had them stripped down.

Also I have noticed that when you rock the bike with the brake held slightly on, there as an amount of knocked that comes from what appears to be the free play in the pads/calipers. The pads are new and although the previous owner didn't smear the sides and back of the pads with silicone grease, I have now done this and also added shims on the top and bottom of the caliper pivot pin to remove any up and down play, the knocking still remains but is only slightly improved.

Having only ridden modern bikes until this getting this one its seems a bit strange.

Cheers
