Title: Stator cover oil leak

Hi ive noticed a little oil on the bottom of my stator cover it's not coming from the 3 bolts on the front of the cover I'm going to replace the gasket but how much oil should be in there if any ??

Some. There is no seal on the #1 main bearing, so some oil can come out and drain back from the stator compartment into the crankcase. What there is will lubricate the starter gear by splash, I was quite surprised when I changed the 3 screws holding the alternator stator and didn't tighten them enough - I put the bike on the side stand after a test ride and oil ran from the screw holes, luckily alerting me to the problem before any damage was done to the stator.

I've just taken cover off there must have been a good pint of oil in there should I have drained oil off first

Thats because you took the gearchange cover off as well

I removed the stator cover first and loads of oil came out of there
