Misc / Open / Frame Painting is Powder Coating best?
« on: October 30, 2020, 12:27:44 AM »
I understand the benefits of powder coating in terms of more paint on edges where the electrical charge attracts extra paint particles but what is this best way to restore your frame?

Assuming you do not have your own powder coating large oven etc is Powder Coating actually the best way to go?
I see the benefits if its done by a good firm - no doubt they will strip the frame etc so not much preparation involved for the customer aside from the initial strip down aspect.

What happens when you damage the finish is there a way of touching up that works?
I'm not a purist so the fact that the technology was probably not around means its not an original finish but who cares if its the best.

Is everyone on sohc a Powder Coater convert? :-\

CB350/400 / CB400F2 - Headlamp options ?
« on: October 26, 2020, 11:50:11 PM »
The headlamp shell on my bike is cracked in 3 areas where screws fit - its plastic so not worth repairing. DS have shells at £23.94, my headlamp is original so basically that needs replacing (£34.80) plus the rim has been damaged the rim price alone on DS is £70.80!!.
I'm guessing the light beam is pretty poor by modern standards so an outlay of £129.54 plus postage I will end up with an expensive candle.

I'm not to worried about originality in this area so am wondering if there is a decent aftermarket lamp that fits between the mounting brackets that measure as a width of 7.25" / 1840mm or thereabouts?

I guess an alternative might be to alter the mounting brackets to accommodate a bigger headlamp possibly a decent LED unit that will also give lots of light output for fewer watts of electricity, has anyone here gone down this route ?

CB350/400 / Anyone recognise the brand ?
« on: October 25, 2020, 10:14:49 PM »
My bike came with a pair of new shock absorbers already fitted - clearly not the original ones (old rusty ones came in a box)  they will do for now - there are odd mounting bolts fitted top and bottom with the top mounts being clearly having rubber bushes that are both different with extra rubber washers on one side - they look as though they have been a bit of a bodge fit.

I'm going to have to fit some new top bushes so they at least match. Does anyone recognise the brand as I can't see a makers stamp jumping out at me. I'm hoping I can get some aftermarket Poly Bushes or something similar so they fit correctlyRear Damper by Macabe Thiele, on Flickr if I cant identify them.

When I had my Yamaha XJ900 the clutch always stuck after a few months of not being used. What causes the clutches to actually stick is it moisture in the engine oil?

When I asked my B-i-L what he did with his quite large motorcycle collection of bikes he almost never rides he told me he put a wedge  in the clutch lever to hold it in the disengaged position!

What is the view here on the sohc site as the best method of avoiding clutch sticking?

CB350/400 / Engine Covers etc oven bake at what temperature / time etc ?
« on: October 15, 2020, 05:57:15 PM »
I've read about using SIMVHT31D paint with recommendations to bake it on in the oven.

Just need to know the cooking instructions - is it put in oven when wet (fire hazard?)or touch dry ?

In a preheated Fan Oven - what temperature is needed - for how long ?

CB350/400 / CB400F2 - front brake parts what's missing?
« on: October 12, 2020, 01:17:48 PM »
The front brakes aside from the disc itself was all in bits in various boxes so yesterday decided to see what is obviously missing with a view to assembling the unit.
I have photographed what I have - so far I need the to replace the following that is apparent at first glance.
No mounting bolts or nut to attach the support to the front fork including associated washers. No bolts to clamp the two halves of the caliper together. The odd spring and long screw has no nut/end plus the screw is out of shape.
It came with a replacement piston as the old one is badly damaged - it has a brass coloured end part - I am assuming that that goes against one of the brake pads. I have no pin between two pads mentioned in the manual but the roll pin type locaters for the pads are OK. I have new DS pads with the nylon pad cushion. DS I guess will be able to supply the bits that I have mentioned as missing & the long bent screw.

Anything else I need to worry about - the caliper bore looks good I have no idea if the piston seal is the original or has been replaced - it looks as the design does not include what I would describe as a dust/water seal/bellow.

CB350/400 / Clutch operating camshaft thingy - worn or normal?
« on: October 10, 2020, 03:14:22 AM »
At first glance I thought this was badly worn but looking at the part picture on DS it looks like its how they are designed!
When I reassemble it is there any point in packing it with grease or will the oil in the clutch somehow provide lubrication?

CB350/400 / Castellated Clutch Nut - how tight ?
« on: October 09, 2020, 07:52:01 PM »
I've been looking for a torque setting for the above nut - does 30Lb-ft sound about right?

Assembled the clutch basket today I have the flat edge of the plain metal discs facing the engine with the notch marked discs all facing outwards and together. The smaller friction disc is against the retaining clip. All looks good and now fitted to the bike, dished washer facing out, lock washer in position,

Just one question about the castellated lock nut - the old one was plain side out with the beveled side against the lock washer - facing the engine.

Is this the right way round before I fasten up and fit the springs etc?

CB350/400 / Clutch assembly question ?
« on: October 08, 2020, 12:03:43 PM »
I'm going to reassemble the clutch later today I have only just noticed one plate is different from the other six being a tad narrower.

Not sure which end this one goes is it the first or the last ?

CB350/400 / What Gasket Goo ???
« on: October 06, 2020, 10:20:14 AM »
Im wondering what gasket adhesive (if any) members us when assembling stuff like clutch covers, engine halves, barrells  etc - obviously not including head gaskets.

Back in the day on mini engines it was just clear grease or for the likes of my old Triumph 21 back in the 1960's  Red Hematite (that never cured the oil leak for more than 10 days).
