Title: Triumph Speed 400
Post by: Matt_Harrington on July 22, 2023, 05:33:56 PM
Just been looking at the pre production videos and info on this bike  - look really good.

I still wonder if Honda will release a new 400....

Looks pretty good and really well resolved styling wise.

Making a 400 that's still compact but with a larger bike style is something that made the 400 four so successful I feel.

The rumours are it will be circa £5k - I feel a test ride coming when they are released!

The magazines say that the build quality is good. I hope that the production bikes are as good. Not like the new BSA Gold Star.

Me being cynical....I can't help it...I'd check out the performance of your local Triumph Dealers before I bought one.........via feedback on Social Media.

These new models might appear to be a nice bike at a reasonable price, but many Triumph Dealers ain't got a particularly good reputation and the Triumph Factory isn't a lot better......I think their main objective in life is to sell high priced bikes and high priced accessories and any problems (genuine ones that shouldn't really be problems - or they cause the Dealers Warranty grief) are swiftly swept aside.

Compare the £5K for this new bike against their £15K to £20K other offerings - where Owners don't seem to be too impressed with what they have got, or the service they have received when they have problems, and maybe that will give you something to consider.

Of course I could be mistaken, and Triumph certainly do make some fantastic bikes for the money, but being a member of a few Triumph Forums....and seeing the Owners banter on a regular basis, that's the general impression that I get.

Good luck though if you decide on buying one.

Am I right in thinking the new 400 will be built in India ?  If it is the reason it's such good value lies in the cheap labour costs etc

I would expect the prices to creep upwards if it is a success in the next few years.

Yes, Bajaj Motors are manufacturing it. The cost in India is around £2300. I think it will be cheaper than the BMW G310R and that is around £4500. Time will tell. I read somewhere that the £2300 price is for the first 100,000 customers but can't find that link now.
It's a volatile market and one Triumph is probably trying to get into around the world - hence the tie up with Bajaj.

There are a few features that appeal to me as I get older, one primarily being the weight.

Ah weight, sadly I can now see the attraction of an e-scooter to get from A2B.
