CB350/400 / Flat Spot Above Idle
« on: June 15, 2015, 12:06:24 PM »
Guys and girls

The carburation on my CB400F seems pretty spot on: starts easily; idles fine; pulls like Thomas the tank Engine

Except in one respect. There is an annoying flat spot just above idle that gets in the way as you are pulling off. I need to use more revs and clutch slip if I want to avoid it.

Valve clearances; ign timing; I think these are fine. Idle screws are set to standard position and float heights likewise. What do I do to diagnose and experiment?

Thanks  :)

CB350/400 / Float Bowl O Rings

I need to replace these (but everything else about my carbs is OK). What's the best source and when I do fit them do I need to add any goo?

Thanks
Tom

Since the other thread had wandered off a bit...

Unavailable on iplayer and in any case if you live outside the UK you'd be stuffed. Fear not:

Misc / Open / Security
« on: March 01, 2013, 09:56:43 PM »
When looking for insurance there is often a question about security devices. This seems to mean locks, alarms or immobilisers.

What do people on here use eg to lock up their bike(s) while out and about or in the garage?

CB350/400 / Steering Lock Key
« on: December 27, 2012, 04:06:13 PM »
I have never had these for my bike. Is it possible to get just the key or does the barrel have to be replaced?

Above the key hole is stamped the number "19" - otherwise the lock is anonymous. Then there is the metal disk riveted on, which I assume has to be drilled out to remove the barrel if keys cannot be obtained separately.

Apologies for rubbish picture

CB350/400 / Wobbly Tacho
« on: November 05, 2012, 02:57:32 PM »
My 400f started very easily after 16 yrs - sounds quiet and idling smoothly.

On connecting the tacho it seems the needle is a bit wobbly. I didn't rev the nuts off it but may be it's also reluctant to climb up the dial to show the proper reading, though hard to say for sure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lsOTOPVyRA&feature=channel&list=UL

What to do to investigate/fix that?

At that price I'm sure I would be but I'd like to restore an F2 (one would be sufficient I suppose)

Never keen on back-street dealers though. Any thoughts?

Tricks & Tips / POR15 Tank Treatment
« on: September 30, 2012, 11:26:16 PM »
I recently used the POR15 kit to treat my 400F tank. Here's how it went.

My bike has been laid up for a while so I looked into the tank with some trepidation. In fact, it didn't look too bad, spine OK and just a bit of rust on a patch at the bottom and in the seam. What to do?

Consulted the interweb and chose the "cola" idea. Put in 2l of "every little helps" and left it for a couple of hours. Rinsed out with warm water and allowed to dry. Result - more rust than before, including some now on the spine.

Tried filling right up with vinegar. Costco this time. Gets all the rust off but once you have rinsed and dried its back pretty quickly. The pictures here show how I seem to have managed to turn a reasonable tank into a filthy one. Hmmm. I wonder if the "tide mark" is where the cola came up to.
