Thanks for that, it would appear that the magnet its self shouldn't adversely affect the charging and as regards the point made with the crank balance the magnet is complete (just with a crack) and I will only be replacing epoxy that has been removed so shouldnt really make a great difference, I may try to set  up a balance rig and ballance the flywheel. I will do this as a back up while I still try to procure the correct rotor , Im sure one will turn up eventually.

Other Bikes / Repair on flywheel magnet

I have been trying to locate a replacement flywheel rotor for my Z1300, and seem to be unable to find the correct one, also no one does repairs on them. My question is the magnets are complete but one has a crack across it, the crack is not on any of the 2 holes that are used for the ignition pick ups, if I was to seal the crack and around the magnet with epoxy would the flywheel still function properly, I know I would be putting another North- South joint in one of the magnets, would this affect the charging or would the magnetic field still be sufficient to correctly charge the system , has anyone any experience with this as when searching the net people say it will ,but have not backed it up with either experience or Electrical knowledge.

Problems when hot could be down to valve clearances have you checked them?

Misc / Open / Re: Getting a Q plate changed to an age related plate.
« on: June 05, 2019, 05:36:41 PM »
Got a NOVA letter today from HMRC for my Canadian frame so thats the way I'll be going I dont suppose anyone will be looking for a Z1300 frame on a Q plate.

I think the reason the bike was Q plated originally when it was almost new the engine got badly damaged in a crash , as the cost of rebuilding it was more than the value of the bike so it was written off the bike is a Kawasaki Z1300 so the cost of rebuilding the engine with new parts would have been very expensive back then. The V5 says on it constructed from parts, nowadays if you can age the parts and the bike is a true reflection of a vintage vehicle it can get an age related plate based on the youngest part, but back then when the vehicle was new to re- register it after it had been written off it had to be inspected and if some of the major parts IE: the engine were not original it was classed as constructed from various vehicles and given a Q plate. But to answer my original question it would look like unless Swansea have lost the details of my frame from their system and I can go through the route of getting a dating letter ect, I think I will need to rebuild it using a Canadian frame that I have when I can sort out all the NOVA stuff. Thanks for the input.

Cheers, I think back in the 80s they would issue a Q plate to a bike that was an insurance right off before they had cat C and D I may need to try and register a Canadian Frame I have.

Misc / Open / Getting a Q plate changed to an age related plate.

Has anyone successfully got a Q plate on a bike changed to an age related plate. The reason I ask is I have just bought a kawasaki from a mate that is Q plated, it has not been on the road since 1996, I am going to apply for a v5 using the frame number as I have told Swansea that I bought the bike without any paperwork, the guidelines say that a Q plate is issued to a vehicle that you cant determine the age, I know that the bike is a 1980 by the frame number and I believe it was Q plated in 1985 because the engine was damaged beyond repair much the same as a newer bike now would be classed as a cat C or D but now still retains its original reg. I am hoping that they cant find any trace of the plate and tell me to re- register the bike when I get it mot'ed I would be grateful to hear if anyone has had any success with this.

CB350/400 / Re: Xring drive chain
« on: May 03, 2019, 09:51:47 PM »
I put a heavy duty 530 non o ring chain on my 400 four, I have done about 1100 miles, I regularly clean adjust and lube it it is hanging off the sprocket, I put an Xring chain on my GT750  (530) and have done about 4000 miles I think I have only had to adjust it twice and its still like brand new, same with my H1, the 520 chain should offer all the benefits of an oring chain but have the width of a non oring 530 plus you can get a gold one which I like.

Thanks for the input I will check my bike with my friends 520 chain when I get back home next week unless the sprockets are too thick there should be no problem with the 520 chain.

CB350/400 / Xring drive chain
« on: May 02, 2019, 08:54:51 PM »
I am bringing up the subject of drive chains, I finished my bike last year and have done about 1200 miles on it, following information I was told that if you fit a standard 530 xring chain the extra width causes it to rub on the fillets in the engine case. My problem is the plain chain I have fitted is a piece of junk compared to the x ring chains I have on my other bikes. Has anyone managed to successfully fit an x ring chain either by fitting a 525 chain, maybe fitting a spacer between the sprocket to bring it away from the casing, or by dressing a bit from the crankcase where the rivets touch, im sure someone must have successfully fitted a modern chain to a 400 four. I have looked at my friends RD350 ypvs which kicks out a lot more power than the 400 four and it only has a 520 chain it would seem to me that the 530 recommended for the 400 four seems a bit heavy as this is the size used on modern sports bikes I think I will try his chain on my bike when I get home to see how it fits.

CB350/400 / Advancer cam
« on: February 06, 2019, 07:52:29 AM »
I am going to fit Accent Electronic ignition to my 400 I have been running one on my Kettle for 3 years without a hiccup my question is when I contacted Uwe at Accent he asked if my advancer cam was 13mm or 15 mm, I know there were 2 different types used could some clarify where it is I measure I would assume it would be the bore of the actual cam from memory it is shaped like a top hat and can be removed by taking off the bolt and opening the weights on the springs. Thanks in advance.

CB350/400 / Re: 400/4 struggles to pick up when warm
« on: September 01, 2018, 05:42:10 AM »
A thing to be careful off is if your bike is not idling when warm recheck your valve clearances if they are too tight the valves wont close properly when heated up and will burn the seats, a good indicator of this problem is the bike will idle when warming up but will not idle at full temperature.

I was going to go for the David Silver system but heard stories of the headers not fitting correctly and hitting the sump , also the issue with not being double skinned, I bought a second hand set of headers for £50, done a few repairs and got them Re-chromed (£300) so worked out about the same price but they fit and they are double skinned.
