CB350/400 / Re: cb400f - carb sync
« on: March 11, 2019, 05:18:01 PM »
Ive done the 400 and its predecessor many times with a set of £70 gauges-The first thing to do is re-build the cabs with a jet-set and O rings. Oh and make sure they are clean!
As you have eluded to-the gauges measure the air-flow/suction-so have nothing to do with mixture setting-thats another black art if you have the correct jets fitted and seals.
From my experience, the most common-fault with those carbs is blockages and leaking main-jet seal-the later causes too much fuel to be sucked up the emus-ion tube - leaving you with a poor metered fuel mixture.

Get all gauges reading the 'same' and you are 80% there. The general 'noise' is an indication of where all 4 'motors' are sharing the load-as said, do the fast-idle and 3k-if one works, the other should. It does take a bit of trail and error- and make sure the tubes (usually brass) are seated and air-tight on the take-off points. Remember, as the engine heats, the readings will change-so just aim for equilibrium-then take it out for a run and re-check.

Just as a side-note- Rich running? How do you know this- plugs back? My first point of call on rich is to remove the air filter- long story short, my sea stand-off bungs where too low and blocking the air-intake. it was fine on the guages and tickover in the garage- then i stuck my fat-arse on the bike and it would pull ....

I'm hoping when I go to get a quote from Footman James I'll get better than the £1054 pa I'm paying for tpft now. alas, someone just mentioned Garage, I'm not able to say i have one. But an out the way garage is probably more vulnerable around here than my being in a gated community, there are two enty phones to pass, it's under a ceiling, with a cover over it...in a courtyard with almost 30 nosey neighbours who know who owns the bike. When I go out for a late night jaunt I see people coming to their windows ...a thief wouldn't stand a chance of going un-noticed but alas, that didn't count on my last quote. Only three companies on 'Go compare' would have me at all. I live in Shadwell east London.

Wow- £1054 for how many bikes?

« on: March 06, 2019, 06:06:42 PM »
Yes, you buy a 'soft link' chain as a replacement (one with a join) but you still have to cut the old one to link in the new one. (Edit....assuming you don't have a soft link fitted already. Standard chain solid, not split)  It also does nothing to sort out a seized horse shoe if you have that problem also. Horse shoe, =engine apart job.

Julie- I know we spoke about this last year and your post/advise fills me with sorrow! Im sure mines jammed.
I had the engine out 9 years ago but only had the sump off- noting lots of ally-filings, but after 30 years, I wasnt surprised...

CB350/400 / Re: Road Tax- 1978 registered bike-400/4
« on: March 06, 2019, 06:02:09 PM »
Can I go to the post office and make my bike Historic registered right there on the computer or do i need to send forms off.  My bike would otherwise be dure for taxing on about 14th april....
Yes, post office change it to historic there and then and they will automatically tax it for 12 months free of charge, no forms to send off. But, if it's not insured, don't forget to SORN  it straight away, otherwise you will get a stroppy letter from the MIB.

The PO will send off the form for you and leave you with the last part- They could do mine as it coupldnt be entered as Historic- they just wrote HISTORIC on section 7. I had called the DVLA this morning (as 2 tax reminders arrived) and after the obligatory 20 minute-wait, I was told to take the form to the PO...They also said my bike wasnt registered officially with them until December '78, which didnt accord with my Log book- which stated September '78. So, i can only assume that Dealers were up to the same tricks back then of pre-registering bikes before they were sold? i don't know, as theres no way I could have AFFORDED a BN bike in '78 as I was a young lift engineer and I had just got married!
The whole MOT thing is a separate issue that has gathered some steam above. My last MOT in Sept 18 was a failure- cracked front tyre, which I didn’t spot- it took some finding as the tread was a-plenty. I had the discussion with the Tester as I knew the 40-year-old thing was upon me in my favour.. He said that some come back every year, regardless. For me, still at work, MOTs and that malarkey always come around when I’m too busy to get one due to work and bad-planning. Ive 4 cars and 3 bikes that all need them, I’ve one that’s overdue, but I can’t be arsed to take my R1 out in this weather and on salty roads as its been mine since new. (Y-reg) So, I note others see the MOT as a 3rd set of eyes and Ill probably do the same. The Road-tax thing is just a principal- my RRS tax also arrived today which is £550. £68 is small-beans  for the 400/4 

Julie,
I understand the tax as I have already done the 400/4 last year.
It was the MOT thing I was reading where it stated that you did not have to apply for the MOT exemption it automatically qualified after the 40th year .

I agree with Paul on this- the MOT man said its probably the last MOT ill ned, but im not so sure..My bike is registered September '78

I went to PO, they were unsure, so wrote 'HISTORIC' tore of the bit, got me to sign the V5 and then couldnt input the request to change!! They told me to tax it for 6 months and come bacl, which will be in the 41st year and after April 1st. Fortunately its a rural PO and they are friendly- lord help anyone in a City where there are queues...(I was the only one in the Post-Office at the time)

We will see!

CB350/400 / Road Tax- 1978 registered bike-400/4
« on: March 06, 2019, 02:26:52 PM »
Hi- Has anyone had any problems with road tax and the 40-year Rule?
My 400/4 according to my log book was registered 1st in September 1978
However, I recived a V11 today to ask me to pay for road tax.
i called the DVLA and they said becuase their databse states my bike wasnt actually registered until December of 1978...? despite the log book suggesting differently, I have to go to a tax office and get a new log book?

Sound a load of beuracratic b**** to me, but has anyone else had simlar experience?

CB350/400 / Re: Fuse Box fun and more...
« on: October 07, 2018, 06:04:57 PM »
Looking at the state of the regulator box and connectors I would check and clean the connectors and earthing points. Make sure battery connections are tight as well. You must have a loose or bad connection somewhere. Just be patient and methodical and work through them all. 👍

Someone critised some pictures i put on FB of my exhast mounts,in reply to a query 'what goes where, help please??'

'Wow= your bike looks well-used!' comes back a reply...= Guilty as charged, the underside of my bike was and is a bit grubby, but im not putting it into a show!

My point is that electrics are not forgiving to rust/oxidisation and general age-related crud. Bullet-connectors were trouble when new and wet, let alone 40-years old, corroded and oxidised. You seriously need to have a bit of a tidy-up of the 'electrics' cupboard on your vintage Honda. They may be simple machines, but trust me- they are a git to solve electrical issues and will fox the Best on here from time to time.

The fuse-box simply unplugs and probably needs to be replaced - the spring-contacts loose thier springy-ness and the fuses- as Ive found out- crack internally or the 'solder' breaks. cary a packet of fags and it'll 'get yer home'. no, dont start up smoking as Id nver recommend that :-)

HaHa- but like the R1 of my vintage one, its got carbs that will need attention if left standing...ruddy pilot-jets!

CB350/400 / Re: Engine bolt spacers
« on: May 24, 2018, 05:26:40 PM »
Make sure you put the bottom engine bolts in correctly, one is 2mm longer and the other is 2mm shorter.  Also don't forget the spring washers (otherwise it's like having a too long bolt).
Failure to follow this advice will spoil your day.

Ill admit to this, so as others will learn- I was installing an engine in to one of these in the late 80's and tightened a bolt stright through the lower crancase on the LHS lower front fixing- ill never forget it! One trashed engine!
On the plus side, engines for these were £50 max from the breakers and plenty of them- I simply brought and installed another!

Over the years, Ive had loads of 400/4s...must be something about them! i was in ANC Maidstone this morning and saw a beautiful Imported (USA) yellow one. no expense had been spared on putting it together and it only showed 11k on the clock. It was a customers and Andy of ANC said he belived it genuine.

CB350/400 / Re: Petrol tank repair
« on: May 24, 2018, 02:05:26 PM »
I have to agree with Nurse Julie- Id buy a new tank. I have a spare for the time when I have to revert to it, but some pattern parts are worth considering- exhaust, master cylinder have been fitted to mine as althouh I dont use the bike much- i want it to be reliable. theres nothing worse than a brakedown on a nice summer weekned due to leaking petrol- which will do more dan=mage than you think! The RAC/AA may not get you home if its a leaking fuel problem.

Tank repair is a specialist job and difficult to find a reliable supplier to do it. As mentioned earlier- theres the dangers, but given you can find someone to overcome that element- you are going to need a re-spray afterdards anyway as welding/brazing might seem localised, but the heat inviolved may well cause bubbling on the shiny-bits.

For what its worth- my 400/4 stinks and always has done when its been for a run. i usually leave it outside the garage to cool down before I put it back in. Ive never given it a second-thought as its 40 years old. I may be wrong but it runs fine. Ive owned this one for nearly 9 years now. Just failed its MOT on front tyre crack- I didnt spot it! Roll on next week for new tyre and re-test. it will be its last MOT.

Im assuming you cant pull the leaver right back to the handle-bar? if you can, then theres air in the system still.
Id also add that it took about 500 miles for my front pads to bed before the brake was anyway near acceptable! As I only use my 400 as a toy, that was 2 years or so.
