Just skimming this thread and I thought valves - clearances, i mean. That causes a 400/4 not to start if they are too LOOSE

On the DSS exhaust- mine was a git to fit and I ended up grinding some of the collets down to get it to bed into the head. All ok now for 2 years- i just need to mark them if i have to take it off again. Cheaper than an OEM and most don't spot the joints.

Mine was a fuse wire had parted company with the ends- after nearly 40 years.
i replaced the fusebox from a better 2nd hand one and all the fuses, off course. that fuse would 'make' contact again when it cooled down!! fag packet paper got me home-

I've gone for an imperial type rather than the metric :-)

Bit of a surprise today- battery fkd! It was a AGM one 3 years ago and always on a trickle-charger. now it won't charge, I can get it up to 10.6v but it just fades away. i thought those MOTORBATT ones were fit and forget- I've had one longer in my R1 and Im sure I had one for years in a R1200GS.
Oh well, I've ordered a lead-acid one, just in case my electrics are overcharging it beyond its tolerance. i don't think I'm lacing it with A/C- and my lights don't dim or fluctuate.

Bike runs fine now , but back to the original query for help.
My rebuild was only successful after curing previous problems
1. The battery must be working correctly in terms of static 12v measurement and charging

2. The fuel supply/carbs must be working correctly- preferably with new jets and seals- the prime offender is the main-jet seal, which if defective will cause incorrect mixture because fuel runs down the side of the jet, rather than being metered correctly

3. Air supply- i ignored this to my peril!

We are all different- i prefer mine to run properly, start etc and am less concerned about it looking pretty. I therefore concentrate my efforts on what i can!

Mike- The bike was awarded a better tank due to internal corrosion and the fact i got one that had a better paint-job. However, the tank its running on had a poor attempt some years back by the look of it- bits flaking off. So, I fitted an inline filter and so far, so good- and that was about 3 years ago (I've owned the bike since 2009).

To the original post- Ive got a spare set of carbs that i brought off ebay for about £70 one winter, as I thought my bad running was carb related- even though Id replaced a full jet-kit to ll carbs (turns out it wasn't, but its good to have spares for these 40-year old machines if you can come by them!) To my spare set, I also fitted a jet-kit...just in case. From memory, as they were not on the bike more than a couple of hours- they ran like you described- poor idling and that was after complete cleaning using the old fashioned method of carb cleaner and air-gun.

It reads that your bike is running weak for some reason- I guess the plugs are a good colour. Most of the things you can check won't need to throw money at it, which can be annoying as well as costly.
i had a lack of power problem which turned out to be the ruddy seat blocking the air-intake. took ages to find as it was so intermittent.
My petcock was in a poor state- but allowing fuel flow into a can didn't reveal it- I've tried to attach a photo of the state of it- [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

CB350/400 / Headlight 400/4
« on: May 21, 2017, 12:47:08 PM »
Boring sunday and avoiding looking after grandkids...Has anyone replaced their headlight- either with a substitute whole unit, bowl, reflector, lease or just the lease/reflector? i remember the CIBE conversion from the 70's that made one heck of a difference.
Mine is a rusty reflector and I've even considered HID'in it as kits are cheap these days. Power consumption a lot less using one of those.but the burner needs to fit. the transistor packs are small enough to 'hide' mount.
Im trying not to go down the H4 high-wattage road and damage the delicate gene or wiring.

Easier that stripping it off to mount it on a lathe! Dremel might assist, but junior hacksaw would be kinder and easier- less chance of going too far!

Rode the CX to Cornwall one summer- it pissed down with rain, i got soaked- bike gear wasn't what it is now- Im guessing it started raining 150 miles in- only another 150 to go from home. Bike ran faultlessly- it was by no means a new one- Id say it had nearly 50k when i did that trip. very comfortable (massive seat) Managed to get 3 points for overtaking on double-whites. Toured around north and South coasts down there- bike gear didn't dry out all week- even gloves...We (a mate who had a GS550) were staying at my mother-in-laws farm (no heating, yep- i know I said summer , but this is UK)
Dispatch riders loved them- and so did I. I traded it in for the ZXR and it was a mistake as I blew the head-gasket after about 9 months of ownership..

Drew- noting your range of bikes, Ive had a few of them! Got to say, CX500 was probably the best on many fronts- i knock up the miles on bikes using them for work. But less so these days.
From the bottom since 1974- CB175, A100, GT750(!!- it was stolen) 400/4, CX500, ZXR400, CBR1000, R1 (still got it- first BN bike i brought 2001), Daytona 955i , GS1150, GSA1200R, GSA1200R, Triumph Explorer, 400/4, Mobylette (!!)

Thats my biking history- the BMWs and Daytona were Firm supplied as I had them instead of car. Then the Boss sold the firm..Good while it lasted for 12 years.

Worth a punt for the cost. The only thing that wears on jets is the seals- unless they have been in for years and poked with needle-files!

The breather as you know recirculates crank case gasses and vapours into the intake. Generally when owner put individual filters on carbs, they just route the hose with an extension down the back of the swinging-arm. i.e - to atmosphere. do not block it off on the camber cover.
