So for the curious, the gist of this damage is that gross misuse has stripped the teeth of 2nd and 3rd, locked up the free/splined cogs causing the shafts to rotate in their bearing housings and ramming the dowels down into the case where they have tried to exit. Subsequently the blind bearings are free(ish) to rotate as they want?

That's some achievement.

Sounds really nice! Like the Yoshis of the 70s. Whole bike looks really great.

My first bike was one just like that in gold. FVF 47K.

Bought it for 150 quid after seeing it in the bike park at NORCAT (Kings Lynn)

Lovely to see such a superb example.

That is toooo much £££ for a strobe light. I am sure the last time I was visiting Watford classic cars, that they had them for less than a 20 pound note  ;)

Indeed. This looks like the best deal out there:

As they say in Private Eye - WELL FANCY THAT!

I've just fitted the Newtronic ignition I bought from Trevor (firet49) so I bought this one.

It was £12.95 +£4.95 postage when I got it and the £19.95 postage in the current listing I assume is incorrect. Anyway, it works OK. Pick up is a little sensitive but I managed to get a good strobe even on 2/3.

I think it's one up from the cheapest. Does one need a rev-counter? F mark lines up when idle, advance mark lines up at 3k. Do we need  more? Won't see much use in my case.

Electronic ignition itself seems great. I know people say points will never let you down etc etc, but, really, fed up with always fiddling with it  ...  ???

Its not all bad John I feel like Iv missed out on the best time to be on the road and the best bikes.

Your sig suggests you are making up for being born too late. When did you get the 400? ;)

You might be half right. I once saw a 550 come up on ebay that had a very similar number to mine, so obviously sold at much the same time. I even messaged the bloke to let him know it must have come from Scooterways in Kensington High Street

Best thread ever! Well done Julie and congrats to both of you.

Is your exhaust original? I know you said you have a Brituro silencer - what about the downpipes?

Super job.

Very much like the satin black, particularly how it picks up the light on the clutch cover and the idea you've left the plate silver :)

CB350/400 / Re: CB400 - Upper Blanking Bolt
« on: December 21, 2017, 01:18:25 PM »
No it's just a blanking bolt at the top of the drilling the push rod runs in. If you choose to push down on the end of the rod while tensioning, then as always on all these engines, just enough and no more is what you need. They used to say "gently while the noise lessens" or something like that.

Hi Julie

Of course not!! Been concentrating on one of the VFRs (acquired a "rare" 1993 8-spoke rear wheel and just had it and a front powder coated) so not much action on the 400.

Terrific thread on yours which I've caught up on. Lovely job and what about that damage ?!!

Son had a coming-together with an Aventador on the Bandit (pull out on roundabout). Very mild and no significant damage but they wrote it off anyway... bit costly for the Lambo I imagine.

Merry Christmas!

Is the engine high mileage? The cam journal in the first pic doesn't look very good :\
