Done a few searches on this but I think I am still struggling to understand so here goes.
I have a US import 400f I wish to register.
I have obtained the forms from the DVLA
I have taken photos of the bike as needed
I have it booked for an MOT

What I do need is to get a "Dating Certificate"
Can anyone recommend who I go to and what I ask for.
DVLA told me I need to contact Honda

Sorry, I am sure for those that have been through this process it is very simple but first time arround it does seem daunting.

Do I need to insure the bike on its chassis number ? I was going to trailer it to the MOT station

Thanks in advance

Russell

Wow, love this thread, I can see it going for many pages. I agree with everything so far, though my biggest hate is the lack of common sense.
As a child, I had many accidents, so I know not to touch things that are hot, tease dogs until they bite you.
Whilst I am not racist, I still cannot believe the Political Correctness of no Golliwogs on Robertson Jam.

CB350/400 / Re: Engine rebuild cost 400
« on: March 08, 2018, 09:00:35 AM »
I had a similar issue in that the bike had previously had a Yoshimura 54mm kit and I needed to replace broken rings. In the end I went for a Cruzin Image 54.5 kit pistons / rings/ head gasket for the same price I was going to have to pay for the Yoshimura rings. (Local Engineering shop bored it as necessary) Needed care getting the pistons / rings back in with virtually no chamfer left, but runs a treat now. I don't abuse the engine though. Rest of the bike is standard ie with airbox and original jets.

Ash,
Clearly you are annoyed by the way you have been messed about, and understandably so, but please do not generalise or even  categorise all newbies or low volume posters as Lurkers. I like many, visit this forum for the pleasure it gives, yes, to ask for help and if I can contribute or help. For myself, I actually ran a car forum 20 years ago, just after we moved from Bulletin boards and the participating characters have not changed, You get the genuine people, the egotists and the idiots and any forum can be a real double edged sword. I have very few posts on here relative to the time I have been registered, but I have restored 4 honda cb400f’s in the time here( which this forum has given me the confidence to do) , I have pm’d members and purchased direct from them. In fact I have even purchased from yourself via your ebay listings.
I think it’s a great forum and those that post regularly like yourself, help to make it so. Just please don’t tar all low posters with the same brush. I might be shy, lacking confidence, unable to suffer fools, but give me a chance because without the newbies this forum would die.

My wife reckons that my "spend" is worth it, as it keeps me out her way and she reckons the only time I am happy is when I have a project, and that between projects I "mope" and get miserable. (An addiction to restoration, with withdrawl symptoms ?)
Last 400/4 cost me £3600 in original bike and parts but I do all the painting, spraying, building myself ( and use the media blaster at the company I worked for )

CB350/400 / Re: CB400f steering head roller bearings
« on: November 26, 2017, 01:14:48 PM »
Thank you that does make sense. I think I will fit it all together and tighten it all up to remove play, then strip it to see how far the lower bearing is up the tube and see if its contacting the shoulder that restricts how far it can travel upwards. If there is a gap still to the shoulder I will measure the gap and make a spacer so it cant pull the bottom yoke up too far.

CB350/400 / CB400f steering head roller bearings
« on: November 26, 2017, 10:30:22 AM »
Just wondered if anyone could help out with my installation of a roller bearing kit. Whilst the bearing kit fits in the top nice and snug it looks like in the bottom of the head tube there ought to be a spacer or similar to stop the bearing going too far up the tube. The kit I bought (M&P) had the dust seals and bearings only, but scanning fleabay it looks like some are supplied with a washer. Do you think this is to use as a packer inside the tube. Your words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Be warned, these bikes should come with a Warning " Can be Addictive"
All the best with your project

What an excellent read this is, especially for a Newbie to the forum like myself as it allows you to form a character image.
Myself, well in my teens my dad said that I would be a Jack of all trades and a master of none - I think he was right.
So, expelled from school ( spent too much time playing with motorbikes when I should have been doing school work..)
Went into Electrical sales, then Vehicle Body Repairs, then local garage mechanic, then went down the mines and ended up in management. After redundancy went into Environmental and Occupational Monitoring. Then Engineering, Motorsport and now semi retired, or should I say "Head cook and bottle Washer" whilst the gaffer is the main bread winner.
Currently I am re-learning all the things that I have forgotten how to do on bikes , but they take a lot longer to do than I remember.
( Now I spend too much time playing with motorbikes when I should be doing housework )

John, can you tell me who your wheel builder is, in Hereford please, as I will soon require a rear sorting out.

Thank you for the responses. I will avoid the copydex, coathangers and sticky backed paper ( nice to know we are of a similar generation ) but I do like the Coke can idea. I will give it a try.

Thanks everyone. I took them in this morning. My only concern is that there is not going to be a great deal of wall thickness left at the bottom of each sleeve and the loss of any usable chamfer may mean a faff with the rings. Just an idea but is it possible to sick two pistons in the barrel first then just fit the gudgeon pins rather than attempting all four piston whilst lowering the cylinders ?

CB350/400 / Rebore costs

I have just had a quote fore boring my 400 barrels to 54.5mm for a big bore conversion. They said £40 per cylinder.
I just wanted to check this was reasonable as I have not done this before. What do you think?
