I didnt fit my rebored barrels and pistons as the ones on it looked in very good condition but had a few broken cooling fins, but I managed to successfully get them welded and then dress them up. the barrels looked as if they had been done recently as there was no wear and the hone marks were still there, I think it is more likely a valve guide that is worn I lapped the valves and fitted new seals but it has the symptoms, rev it at a standstill and it smokes but if im going along the road it doesnt.

Ive just about finished my four four everything seems to work OK apart from I have a bit of smoke I think I will have to take my top end off when I get home I either have a dodgy valve or Ive nipped a scraper ring , The bike runs fine apart from that I have done about 150 miles so far.

CB350/400 / Re: voltage regulator
« on: May 27, 2018, 02:26:36 PM »
That explains it good it works with an exciter which is an electro-magnet on the alternator, when the battery is low it lets the full voltage through and the electro-magnet gives maximum current, when it reaches a higher voltage the battery voltage goes through a resister in the voltage regulator reducing the voltage at the magnet and hence the current output, and when the voltage is excessive it goes to ground giving no voltage at the magnet and hence no output from the alternator, someone on mine obviously connected the 12v in and the exciter wire to give maximum current all the time which would have eventually cooked the battery.

Im offshore just now but when I get home to complete the wiring I will check the operation of the regulator and if it is in spec I will leave it alone.

I am in the middle of doing the wiring on my bike, I have had the engine running which appears to be OK but my question is about the voltage regulator when I took the bike apart only 1 wire was connected to the regulator and the other 2 were bridged, I have since reconnected the 3 wires correctly to the regulator, does anyone know why these would have been bridged out, and does anyone have experience of replacing the old regulator with a more modern version.

Thanks for the pictures I will have one last look today I can't see any yellow paint it's looks as if the old shells will be getting refitted they are not too bad I would have liked to put new ones in since I have spent so much on the bike I will check them with plasitigage to be sure.

Close Steve,
‘Make a new plan Stan...’

Anyway, I’ve recovered sufficiently from our walk in the glorious Orkney sunshine - the colours of everything were stunning and even the skylarks were singing.

Ogri:

Dragged the ring in front of my iPad and the outside is lightly rusty the inside quite reasonable but nothing that a bit of prep and paint won’t sort.
Forgot to say that it’s the one without the indents.

I’ll take a couple of pics and will pm with details.  Did you want to hang fire to see if you win the eBay one?  Not really bothered about selling but you can have it for a donation to our Orkney Men’s Shed - you may know of those, there will be one in your area.  I should be travelling from Southport to Arrochar next Tuesday (24th) so might be able to meet mid afternoon if it suits.
Ian

Good idea since Ive put a bid on it if you get a chance send me a pic Ill not bid any more on the one on ebay, Stevie.

I will still mot my bikes but a handy thing about it is if your tax needs renewal and you cant get or the waether is too crap to take your bike for a mot you can still tax it rather than having the hassle of sorning it.

I use Peter James myself , this year I got an unlimited  mileage policy for my 3 bikes as the previous one was 1000 miles per bike which I can cover very easy, I go out most Saturday mornings and do my favorite circuit of about 120 miles so its easy to go over I made the first claim of my life when I got a puncture on my GT750 and didnt want to leave it anywhere, also its tricky to fix on the road with the 4 exhausts, but they came and took me home within about an hour and a half.
