Title: Speedo Drive
Post by: Deano400 on May 16, 2018, 12:22:58 PM
I'm looking for some advice on my speedo drive. I would like to strip and clean up. Has anyone got any tips on getting it apart? Little screw comes out easily enough but where do I go from there without butchering it?

By little screw I don't mean the one in the picture, it's a very small one out of view.

On the opposite side to what the picture shows you will find a circlip holding the large gearwheel in place, remove that and the gear wheel, and that in turn should release the spindle that drives the cable (after removing the screw you refer to) Wash all parts in something to remove all the old manky grease, dry thoroughly and check everything for wear or damage. If all okay, apply fresh grease and re assemble.

Circlip is out, gear wheel is out, little screw is out, but I can't get the spindle / plug out, any ideas?

Spindle and plug out today.  :)
Put the speedo drive in the freezer for a couple of hours then applied a bit of heat to the casing then tapped out the spindle with my newly acquired spindle removal tool!! Came out quite easy, only a few light taps.

Does anyone know a part number for the seal that goes onto the speedo gearbox?

Do you mean this seal? AE1967E

The parts book only shows the complete unit and not the seal as a separate item.

Yes that is the seal.

I want to strip and clean my speedo drive but if the seal gets damaged when removing it I would like to be able to source a replacement.

I have tried to remove the seal but it seems to be stuck fast so might get damaged.

Deano400,

That eBay link is BearingshopUK I Googled them and they are in Rochester in Kent, I happen to have a job there tomorrow I will pop in and see if they have one available.

K2-K6,

I was born in Wimbledon and now live in Sutton so not far from you.

Gregshiv,  I've moved in to London some time ago nearest to what is known here now as West Wimbledon and used to be Raynes Park.

Did you use the Aprillia dealer that was once over this way? It was at the end of my road.

Hope you get the seals sorted on your trip to Rochester.

K2-K6, moved from Wimbledon to Raynes park when I was 7, we lived just off Grand Drive.

Did not know there was an Aprilia dealer in Raynes Park, used to go to Frontiers in Wimbledon Chase also Elite Motors, Garratt Lane Autos in Tooting , Mocheck and Gus Kuhn Motors in Clapham.

All the old bike dealers from my youth have gone now.

I bought the new speedo drive seal in Rochester on Friday but not from BearingshopUk as they had none in stock but on the proprietors suggestion form a seal shop in the same industrial estate.

Old seal on the right and new seal on the left.
