Title: Insurance on frame number
Post by: El__burro on November 27, 2015, 02:10:27 PM
Hello, i am stuck in this catch 22 situation.
I need insurance (and MOT) to register my cb750;
unfortunately my insurer (on my BMW R80) has asked me for an extra £65 to cover the CB for 14 days.

Can anyone recommend a cheaper "on frame number" insurer.

thanks

thanks again, i mean any insurer that "specialises" in frame number cover.
Honestly I don't need a year cover, its just to register it.

thanks

You'll pay through the nose just to 'temporarily' insure a bike, regardless of whether it's on the VIN or final reg number.  Footman James are pretty flexible about adding new bikes on a classic policy. My advice would be move your business to them, put all the bikes on a classic policy and done with it.

I had the same issue when registering my 450....They said it was for 14 or 30 days I can't remember.?
When the time expired due to  great DVLA efficiency. .I just rang up explained and they extended the time.
They seemed happy as long as I kept them informed.

I took a £42 theft only policy with Carole *&&^% Nash on just my frame number, on the understanding I could extend it to give me road cover on the frame number only for MOT purposes. When I wanted to do this, they wanted £128 for cover, for the rest of the year, plus £50 to change it. No 30 day option was available.

I told them where to stick it, so they charged me £62, to cancel a £42 policy. And then they said they were doing me a favour as a £25 admin charge could have been £50.

Their gobs*&^e with a mike at the NEC show didn't know how close I came to grabbing it and telling the world what I thought about them. Now insured with Bennetts, less than £100 fully comp for the year.

I am ignorant to all this "frame number insurance"
can anyone explain what its really for & what it means ?

I am with Carol Nash & I have experienced their charges for changing, but I objected to paying when I changed my registration number to a private one & they waived the fee, perhaps because it was my first policy with them.

Cheers

Take my case for instance..
i am registering a motorcycle that has lost its paperwork and plate number.
In order to obtain a new V5 and a plate number I must register it again with the DVLA.
The final process requires the vehicle to have an insurance and mot and since you have no plate number some insurer can cover the vehicle on a short period basis (15/30 days) that can be extended in some cases if/ when the vehicle gets a plate number.
It's a catch 22 and an annoying (and costly) situation to be in.

Hope it makes sense.

To register a bike that is not on the DVLA website E.G. an import or one that has never been issued a V5 you need an MOT and an insurance certificate. As there is no registration number yet you get an insurance certificate with the frame number on it BUT these tend to last only 30 days and cost the same as a year so you need to get a Year of Proof of Build letter(can take 8 weeks), an MOT certificate(personally i think it best to trailer to MOT just in case you need to fix things), get all the DVLA paperwork filled in and then get the insurance so that you have the maximum time for DVLA to piss you about

Actually I didn't need any insurance to register my CB750, for some reason that requirement has been quietly dropped, though it is still mentioned in the 'how to' guides. That said mine is old enough for Historic Vehicle free road tax, maybe that's why, but IIRC, there was no mention of an insurance certificate on the registration forms, so they didn't get one. I waited until I had a registration number, then insured it with Bennetts in the normal way.

What they did need was the NOVA number, which the DVLA check against the HMRC database to check VAT was paid on arrival, but they were too stupid to see that I had provided it, and sent me all the forms back. Second time lucky for me.  8)

How long ago was that MrDavo?
In my actual paperwork V55/5 the insurance certificate is a requirement to be ticked by the DVLA upon receipt of the registration form together with MOT certificate, NOVA and the £55 fee.

That was in October. The box was there on my form too, but for some reason that only applies if you live in Northern Ireland, I don't know why. The booklet ' How to import a vehicle into the UK' says the same thing.

I did wonder if they would send the form back, but although they did, because they didn't see the NOVA number I provided, insurance wasn't mentioned.

That said, as it's a 1971 bike I get free road tax, if you are paying to tax it maybe you need to provide insurance details for that.

Ok, and you have since got a plate number and V5?
Now I am tempted to give it a try,
mine is also tax exempt.
My aim is to pass MOT first anyway.

Hopefully yours wasn't just a one off.

I'm pretty sure that even if you are taxing a free road tax vehicle you still need valid insurance and MoT.
Don't see why zero cost tax would change that.

Still at this,
almost time to insure my other bike but the best quote cover doesn't do frame number cover (for this bike).
I am in the process of taking both bikes to do an MOT but..
Can anyone help me to fill in this tick box. (V55/5)
I really hope that "insurance" can be left blank for this process.

Thanks

I always had to produce insurance cover on frame number(done several but not for a few years) and I found most companies will issue a cert on frame number BUT only for a limited time even though they want a years premium

I've spoken to DVLA customer service and received confirmation of compulsory insurance and tax (even if it is exempt).
I am tempted to send the paperwork without the insurance, the best quote so far is £97
Thanks
