CB550 F2
Does anybody have experience of the oil seal sets sold by cruzinimage? Just bought a heap of stuff including piston rings, cables etc, but lack confidence with engine stuff and only want to do it once.
Also, what’s the popular opinion on a source for steering head taper bearings? I’ve trawled the site and can’t find anything conclusive.
Thanks in anticipation.

Silvers sells oil seal sets and races sets. All the taper sets tend to have a too tall top bearing meaning the chrome top nut only screws on a couple of threads, you also have to work out the correct spacer below the bottom inner race

Taper sets sound tricky. :-\. Do I keep the Cruzinimage seals as spares ;)

Guess I’ll have to play Russian roulette on the tapers.
On seals, I wonder from where Long John sources his OEM seals? Same location as our man in Japan? Pure speculation on my behalf.

Ken, i never used to have problems either but perhaps they are modifying dìfferent ones now, i bought severalindividual bearings from Hi-level and had no problems either but keep reading about problems both on US board and here.
To original poster i put a 1mm shim washer on the strm before the inner for lower and thatjust let the yoke clear the headstock, be advised things vary and you need the thinnest possible to stop yoke touching

Ok, will purchase from the man Silver and see what happens next.
Unless somebody puts me right, I’ll buy some oem seals too, not because I don’t trust the ones I’ve bought, but because I’m naturally anxious and lack experience.

David Silvers engine seal kits are fine.

Hi, Julie.
I’m guessing the ones I’ve sourced from a popular supplier in Japan probably won’t be?. Been in touch with DS and unfortunately they don’t do kits, just single OEM (mainly) items. I’ll get my shopping trolley out.
Cheers

They do stock (or make up) the engine seal kits. Another Forum member wanted a kit for his 500/4 about 3 weeks ago, none in stock, a week later, they had them in stock 🙄🙄🙄. They just put all the required seals in a plastic bag and call it a kit, which works out cheaper than the individual items combined.

That was me who Julie referred to ref DS seal sets being out of stock - had to buy individually.
On the subject of seals, on the crank seal (CB end), the seal has a steel shim face on one side - based on the seal lip, does that face inward?
-
Thanks guys.
I’ll be back on the phone tomorrow. The reply I received was by email, so with any luck a quick call and they will pull a set together for me.
I want to get this right so thanks for your patience.
I’ll keep the others I bought as standby...they were not expensive.

Philward.
You mean the critter on the right?

Metal face inwards Phil, same as CB750/4.

Thanks Julie

CB550 oil seal set from DS £43.58 inc vat and post. Total of ten seals. Just for information for those who need to know.
I’ll hang on to the ones sourced from Japan as ‘emergency spares’ unless anybody on the forum has had success with them.

I knew it was the right seal, just which way round it was - sorted now thanks
