oh dear, just arrived home and in the last mile the top end has started making a squeaking sound. I switched off the engine and kicked over with ignition off and still makes sound. I think I will have to take the top off and have a look before I do any more damage. So ends 23 years of continuous faithfull service.
Does anyone have a spare top end for a 500?

Don't panic, I am not that keen to part with bits but if needs must I have decent top end bits stashed. Fingers crossed it's nothing too bad.

interesting idea, I've never known plugs to come loose but I will look tomorrow. The annoying thing is I don't have any transport at all now.

Quick test, remove the alloy end caps on the rocker cover then undo the bolts holding the steel brackets they bolt to, oil should pour out from the bolt hole on both sides with engine running, this will confirm(or not) oil flow to top end
-
thank you Bryan, I will try that.
-
Thanks Bryan, I took out the bolts as suggested and oil came up fine.
The best summer weather in ages and my bike is unhappy, so annoying. I think I will try riding again and see it I can work out where the sound is coming from. At least oil is getting to the top.

Try disconnecting the tacho cable mate also tightening the exhaust to head studs, I chased a "Tappet" noise for half a day till I realised it was an exhaust leak, Didn't want to overload you with ideas on first comment
-
good thinking, the tacho cable is in fact broken anyway.
-
If the cable is broken, you wont have bothered checking or lubing it since, so Bryan is probably right, the bit that fits into the camboc is probably as dry as a nun, and it will be metal to metal, that would squeak/squeal. Try with the cable removed from the cambox.
-
yes, it has been broken for years :D
-
Is the cable still on the bike?
-
it is, I'm going to take it off and order a new one from Dave Silver.
-
In the meantime, as Bryan suggested, physically remove the cable from the cambox and see if the noise goes away.
