Title: Just about done
Post by: ogri211 on June 12, 2018, 08:43:03 PM
Ive just about finished my four four everything seems to work OK apart from I have a bit of smoke I think I will have to take my top end off when I get home I either have a dodgy valve or Ive nipped a scraper ring , The bike runs fine apart from that I have done about 150 miles so far.

Looks great
Does the top end come of with engine in frame

nice job mate, I once had smoke on a triumph cub after rebore and new piston, it turned out I had put the scraper ring in upside down.

Yes they do Pete, plenty of clearance unlike the CB750's  :'(

I didnt fit my rebored barrels and pistons as the ones on it looked in very good condition but had a few broken cooling fins, but I managed to successfully get them welded and then dress them up. the barrels looked as if they had been done recently as there was no wear and the hone marks were still there, I think it is more likely a valve guide that is worn I lapped the valves and fitted new seals but it has the symptoms, rev it at a standstill and it smokes but if im going along the road it doesnt.

Another thing I used a cheap gasket set from ebay I read somewhere that a faulty head gasket can cause it to burn a bit of oil.

it doesn't sound serious, give it at least 1,000 miles and see what happens, did you fit new rings ???

No I never but maybe I should have. I gave the liners a hone.

I think you may be right thinking about it, for me to hone the barrels and refit the old rings doesnt make sense, I have a brand new set of Cruising image piston kits that are the same oversize as my barrels, I think I will order some Honda circlips and gaskets and try fitting them when I get home.

Check the end gap when you fit them

Lovely looking bike. My first 400/4 was a red one. Hope you find the problem.

Sorted fitted my rebored Barrels and new pistons ,engine is nice and quiet and not a bit of smoke , the ones that were fitted looked as if they had just been machined but they were too loose in the bores may have been a bad machining job.
