Title: CB400 4 Clutch Basket
Post by: Eddie Kirby on October 21, 2023, 02:08:15 PM
G,day guys. I have recently rebuilt the motor on my 1975 CB400 4. Start up!!! loud knocking noise from clutch.
Remove and stripped, clutch basket/gear has slap and rattle. seems to have possible cushion wear between the gear and basket.
Is this normal?? Can these dismantled, new cushion rubbers inserted and rivets replaced?

This guy was selling replacement clutch rubber baskets but not sure if he is still doing them:

I think there is a youtube clip on how it's done...

I just received my Clutch basket repair kit. Has anyone else done this repair?  any tips or thought would be appreciated. I got the rivets drilled out so far. The Rubbers are a nice tight fit and made from Viton Rubber. Looking forward to that rattle going away.

Got It done!  It came out great. The hardest part was getting the little buggers over the post and in the hole. I had to give them a bath in boiling water and then lots of oil. Super clean inside this engine with 20k miles. Someone was good on changing the oil regularly!

Yep, that's Max who makes them. He also makes the carb spindles from stainless for the 400’s and are a lovely piece of kit👍

On this subject although I replaced the primary drive & rear hub rubbers on my 400 I did not replace these clutch basket ones .

Aside from wear you might find when dismantling the clutch basket  is there a symtom that might appear indicating that they need replacing?

When the bike is running. It's a very loud clanking coming from the clutch area. Pull the dipstick and the decibel level goes way up! The noise does not go away by pulling the clutch in. It does go away at speed due to centrifugal force or the like. So it's just annoying at idle. You won't see any wear on the clutch basket assembly. There will be slop between the gear and the basket itself. The rubbers are fully encased between the riveted plate and the rear of the gear. So the cracked and brittle rubbers can not get into the crankcase.

Thankfully I am not aware of any clutch noises atm

Did you find the work in the listing such as countersigning the plate easy?

I bought the kit that came with a new plate that was already  Countersunk. I had to slightly countersink the aluminum mating surface for relief . The heads did not or were not intended to go down totally flush. They stuck up about  0.5 mm. A bonus was the existing holes in the basket were the perfect size to recieve a 5 mm tap.

Max supplied me with the csk screws for my clutch kit Ted. He also advised me to use some green loctite on the threads in addition to staking them as a precaution.

The staking sounds a good idea Dave - especially on a small screw.
I guess one good punch mark will suffice with a good sharp punch.
