« on: August 27, 2023, 02:56:42 PM »
I have x2 RHS exhausts for Honda CB550k3.
These are genuine Honda/Sankei exhausts for cylinders 3 & 4.
Good solid condition.
Chrome is good.
But there is some 'gravel rash' at the end of the silencers.

Collection only in Cheltenham Glos.
open to sensible offers.

CB500/550 / Camping with the K3.

So who says you need a modern adventure bike to go camping....
When a 'traditional tool' still does a perfectly good job!

CB500/550 / Refurbished rear wheel
« on: March 08, 2014, 09:33:48 PM »
Just thought I'd share with you some of my prep for my MOT & hopefully some fine Spring weather.

My 550 rear wheel was in a sorry state; rusty & a couple of broken spokes, heavily rusted chrome rim, cracked hub lining.
Over the winter I hunted down an original wheel with great chrome, sound spokes & hub - an American import I'm told.
- trouble is there's a lot of sand in those American 'dry states', gets everywhere!

It needed stripping & a thorough cleaning & new bearings.
So now i've fitted  a new tube & Dunlop TT100 - keeps that classic look.
Re-lined brake shoes courtesy of Villiers Services - better than some unknown brand on flea bay
SKF Precision bearings -  ;D
Checked & cleaned cush drive rubbers
a general clean & degrease of the hub
- Now we're ready to roll.
I hope Mr MOT-man agrees next week!

Other Bikes / CB250RS Drive Sprocket Seal
« on: September 10, 2013, 10:16:36 PM »
I really can't believe it!
(Apparently) It seems that back in the 80's Honda designed an engine (the CB250RS) where you have to split the crankcase in order to replace and fit the final drive sprocket shaft seal!
Crazy!
- unless anyone out there knows a way of fitting a new seal without a complete strip-down of the engine bottom end & gearbox.

Hi,
my lad has just started his first 'project', a CB250RS 'cafe'
Any one know if the Genuine Honda Workshop Manual is still available for the 'RS' or even an online download?
- not that he'd read it!
cheers

CB500/550 / Lap/skim face of cylinderhead
« on: July 26, 2012, 01:32:57 PM »
CB550K3:
I want to just 'refresh' the surface of the cylinderhead on the gasket face, by just having the head lapped, say a "couple of tenths".
That should be ok to do that without loosing valve-piston clearance, shouldn't it?
- any thoughts?

CB500/550 / cylinderhead overhaul
« on: May 27, 2012, 11:00:06 PM »
[continuing on from my December thread....... I know I'm a but slow at this game]

I did decide to 'live with my slight oil weep' from the head gasket for a while, but now the old girl has taken up smokin'!

Compression test seemed good (?) at around 150-170psi; so I'm thinking it's probably valve stem seals.
& for all I know they may well be 35 years old!
So having followed the 'if it aint broke dont fix it school', it's now broke, so i need to fix it!
This means off with the head, to do valve seals and the gasket/oilways; & generally check it over.
- at least I'm a dab hand at removing carbs (down to 30 minutes after several years of training!); the pipes are off (me thinks I may need to do something with those down pipes too... probably throw money at them).
-rocker cover off, but one of the two camchain sprocket bolts is seized on solid, and the flats are now rounded. Doh! >:(
I think I'll have to invest in a set of "Irwins bolt removers".

http://www.screwfix.com/p/irwin-5-piece-bolt-grip-nut-remover-set/96028?cm_mmc=GoogleBase-_-Datafeed-_-Automotive-_-Irwin%205%20Piece%20Bolt%20Grip%20Nut%20Remover%20Set

- any tried those?

I let you all know how I get on....

CB500/550 / New slow jets work wonders!
« on: March 10, 2012, 10:24:28 PM »
Today I fitted my new ("042 size, press in type) slow jets to my 550k3 & it has given 'Ceebee' a new lease of life.

Tickover is so silky showroom smooth now.

I should have done it years ago (instead of all that carb cleaner, solvent soaking, ultra-sonic cleaning)
I bought the jets from Sirius Consolidated Inc Canada (I got stung by UK Customs for VAT, but now I dont care)

I also reset all the carb float heights to spot-on 14.5mm, as measured at opposite end to the pivot (previously they were way out at 17mm!). My carbs are the Keihin 'PD'-type with brick-shaped floats.

I just reset the air pilot screw to 1&half turns out while carbs were apart.

Fitted the carbs back on (did it within an hour; warmed the air intake rubbers and lubed with WD40, then "massaged them into place"; I find a smooth-end screwdriver blade helps)
-then at first attempt with half choke she fired up and ticked over at 1500rpm, then after a minute of so pushed choke in, and sat there ticking over at 1100rpm!

- I used to have to juggle throttle and choke, with revs going up-n-down like a yoyo, till it warmed up.

On my testride I also found that she pulls much much better from mid revs; I think that float height might have made the fuelling a little lean(?)

So if anyone out there has ever had problem with uneven tickover, new slow jets is your answer!

A few images attached.

CB500/550 / 550 head gasket - slight oil leak
« on: December 16, 2011, 05:13:34 PM »
Hi,
This Autumn my 550K3 developed a slight oil weep at the LH-end (No1 Cyl) of the head gasket. :(
Nothing too serious, just an obvious wetness after say a 30mile run.
["I'm a great believer of "if it ain't broke don't fix it", but then I dont suppose this will cure itself!]

Isn't there an o-ring seal for an oil way from block-to-head on that side?
Its probably the original seal, so after 35years its must be due for replacement.

Me thinks its time for a top-end overhaul.
I think the "head-off job" is "a tank-off, in-frame job" isnt it?

CB500/550 / Are 'DIY' Ultra sonic cleaners any good for carb cleaning?
« on: November 25, 2011, 08:37:20 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has tried using the 'DIY' Ultra sonic cleaners you can buy these days?
Would they be effective on carbs? (assuming the cleaner tank is big enough!)

I see Maplins do some small units at low prices:-
http://www.maplin.co.uk/ultra-7000-ultrasonic-cleaner-223108

http://www.maplin.co.uk/professional-ultrasonic-cleaner-8050-h-261248

Or, should I find a professional outfit, and send the carbs away for cleaning?

Other Bikes / Shock Absorber oil
« on: May 10, 2011, 06:35:43 PM »

Is this a leak or just 'inhibiting' oil or grease on a new shock absorber?
 ???
