CB500/550 / Carb stud hunt
« on: May 02, 2018, 09:38:37 AM »
Hi everyone,
My '76 550 build is missing a single carb stud (part number 90043-323-300 M6x32) & (probably not unsurprisingly to some of you) I'm struggling to find one (new or used). Is anyone breaking a head, has one for sale (required in Leeds, UK) or knows where I could pick one up from on/offline?
Many thanks for any help offered.
Andy

Exactly the plan Tomb! Ali plate awaiting shaping & will remove the whole drive assembly.

Thx for the info on the gear holder Seabe. I was looking for an alternative to a pension  :o

Thx Wenman & Mosse,

I've seen that plug & may well go down that route but have an idea to fashion a "plate" which would do away with most of the external part of the arrangement (I'll try to post a sketch up to describe the idea).

Good to hear about the carb set up not really needing a rev counter. I'd be interested to hear the results / jetting settings for the 4 into 1 & pods. Sounds like the same as I'm aiming for.

I've also seen a small hub mounted speedo advertised  online which still further cleans the cockpit area & does away with another cable run. I'll look for that link too (but I'm toying with a GPS option too).

Thx again.

If I can manage to get the bike to hold an even tickover, I'll be WELL chuffed :o (it sounds like a challenge in itself & seems a long way off atm but I'm moving the project forward - slowly - so we'll get there in the end)!!!

Thanks Delta,

I don't know my bike at all (it was bought in many many...many bits & pieces  :o) so something like the alternatives you've mentioned will probably be my best option,

Thanks for the starting point. I'll take a look into both!

CB500/550 / Blanking off rev counter - to do or not to do?
« on: August 02, 2017, 01:18:43 PM »
Hi there everyone,

I recently discovered that the rev counter drive gear casting of my CB550K2 has completely sheered at the point it leaves the rocker cover & one side of the "slot" (that the rev counter cable end locates into) has also snapped off so an alternative solution needs to be sorted out (i.e. either find a replacement part or do without a rev counter on the final build altogether).

Before I finalise the idea I've had for the neatest way of opting for the latter (preferred) option & blanking off the hole that would be left in the rocker cover (ditching the clock would help significantly clean up the cockpit area #cafebuild), is there any reason why I shouldn't do away with the rev counter?

One potential issue I can foresee is setting up the carbs without accurately knowing the revs. Is it essential to know the revs or is there a trick out there means I don't need that particular bit of information? Thinking out loud....I wonder if there's a way I could Heath Robinson the rev counter "off" the bike just for the purposes of the carb setup????

Over to you you amazing people. Is there's any information / advice you can offer :)

Thx Mike but I'd be more comfortable being able to discuss / pass the whole job on in person (don't trust my cardboard manipulation or measuring for one :). Thx for the offer tho!

It's modification to the tank that I'm looking at (think inverted boxing). It will reduce the capacity of the tank but the bike's not going to be any sort of long distance cruiser so mileage isn't an issue. The seat is going to be a brat style so there'll be no hump to hide it under. I'll be considering the Antigravity type of battery (& possibly...but not definitely, as I've a feeling it could very easily bite me.......kick only & so having an even smaller battery to squirrel away somewhere).

It's a sheet metal / welding magician that I'm trying to track down!

Hi,

When thinking about freeing up "that triangle" of my cafe racer / brat - & more specifically, locating the battery - I'm looking into the idea of "hiding" the battery under the tank (securing it to the frame). It will need a bit of chopping & fabrication (& careful isolation / insulation from the tank of course) but can't see why it shouldn't work (???).

Taking it that it's a realistic idea to investigate further, is there anyone out there (around the Leeds / surrounding area) who just loves doing this kind of sheet metal work or knows someone who does?

Cheers.

Hi all,

Having found the name, does anyone know how I would get in contact with Gerban van der Meer, if required? He sounds like the kind of carb guru able to bring a set of cantankerous PD46a carbs back to their (questionable) former glory.

Cheers.

Yes, I read elsewhere in the forums that these pesky carbs can be prone to "going off" when stood. That's frustrating (particularly when the bike will no doubt be used on the rare sunny days we have.

I've found a detailed carb stripping guide (will check if it's the same you mentioned Ash) & will consider doing the full job (at least I'll be able to make them look good even if they prove tempremental). I've also read of a contact in Holland (I'm blanking on his name atm but have written it down at work - Van Der G... something) who sounds like he does a cracking job at fettling them which could be a fall back option. I like the idea of the hex headed screws! I've done the same to the engine with SS replacements (the old ones on there seem to be made of brown cheese). Is there any resource that specs th various sizes, thread types etc. of screws, nuts & bolts throughout the bike that will help in finding, as well as replacing/swapping, them as the bike slowly goes back together?

Thank Bryenj. Yes, I took the jets out before they went to USC & will sort them out individually.

Great 1st experience. Thanks for everyone's help.

That's a relief.

I'll give em a go as they are & see how they get on.

Thanks again for your help.
