Hi, I have a couple of questions that are probably really basic but I don't want to damage anything due to lack of understanding in what Im doing. Im polishing the clutch casing and thought it makes sense to replace the 2 oil seals in it. Do I remove these by simply prying them out and push-fit some new ones? Also, I want to clean the oil strainer that sits above the sump pan (funnel shaped thing with a fine mesh in it). Does the wire mesh just pull out of the funnel shaped casting, it looks as if it has a black plastic ring at the edge. Thanks

Oh Mike not a great start for the new bike - thank goodness it was nothing serious like a brake part.

Are you refering to the short shaft on the front of the shifter that is usually has a rubber on it?
Yes, that’s the fella Ted

Hacked off as went out for a run in the beautiful weather today; got home and the gear shifter knob fell off. Seems to have either not been properly welded to the shifter arm or mysteriously sheared through. 334 miles from new, let’s see how the warranty performs.

Whilst I was scrolling through cat videos on instagram this popped up: https://www.theadventurists.com/guides/monkey-run-morocco/

I got chatting to a biking mate about it and we thought we might give it a go. Has anyone done something like this and have any experiences to relate?

I’d be interested to see how Mike gets on with the (pseudo) 270° engine.
So far so good but only 250 miles ridden. I don’t have much to compare it with as previous bikes have all been twins back to my CB 250G5 in 1979. I did test the 660 tiger sport but didnt click with it. Will report back on how I get on.

Took a test ride on a new Triumph Tiger GT PRO,,instantly smitten
I test rode the same model at bulldog triumph in Reading. I ended up with a brand new pre registered Tiger 850 sport with a ‘free’ set of aluminium luggage. Very different to the Speedmaster I had before but no chrome or polished casings to keep clean so the theory is I will ride it more as I no longer fear a bit of moisture may tarnish the bike.  Wry happy with it!

Im going to buy some of that car wrapping material; they do that in chrome and a small sample is  £4 from eBay. Enough to experiment with on a starter motor cover. It’s probably rubbish but you never know

I’ve never heard of this stuff before. I’m eagerly awaiting delivery now.

I used the Surfex at the recommended dilution in a spray bottle and an old paintbrush to agitate it on the surface. Holy cow this stuff is good! The sump pan came up bright and shiny inside and out with just a couple of mins cleaning. Thanks for the recommendation I can see this is going to get a lot of use.

Do you know where to get it from Bryan? My starter motor cover chrome is shot and I was thinking of painting it as getting just that rechromed doesn’t seem to make sense in terms of cost or time. Might be a good test case?

I have a quad lock on my bike (Triumph Tiger 850 Sport) and my son has one on his T100. They are great and don’t take up much space. I think you can get various mounting options. I just use for satnav. If there is room on the bars it’s a good option.

Brembos on the front Ted

It’s a 1200cc parallel twin.

Same engine as my speedmaster I think. A big engine but very manageable IMO.

Thanks all. I will start @20:1 and just before I start to paint will wipe down with brake cleaner and a new lint-free cloth. I'll probably use a few of the microfibre cloths that come in a multi-pack from Halfords for a couple of quid. Still a lot of Dremelling to go yet.

I have ordered some of the Surfex-HD. For the casings I assume that after stripping/Dremmeling and removing the swarf, filings and general gunk that I use neat on the aluminium and then wash off with water, allow to dry and then paint; is that the right sequence?
