Hello everyone.
Well the 400 is finally finished.
Starts on the button-sounds awesome.
Only problem now is indicators don’t flash-they come on-front and rear and console.
Relay clicks once-but no flashing.
Every other lightetc works perfect.
Relay swapped for working item-still no wink wink.
Open to suggestions please?
Thanks
Paul

Are you using standard bulbs?

Supposed to be 12V, 21W blubs. Are you certain that the replacement flasher relay works ok.
-
Thanks for advice.
New indicators are 10w bulbeds (not LED).
Pulled all my lovely wiring apart and connected 21w indicators to right hand side-
No difference-still no flashing.
I don’t think I need to connect all 4.
Confident new relay works fine as fellow forum member sent it to me after checking it works.
So where next??

It's usually bad earths if your wiring is standard
-
"It's usually bad earths if your wiring is standard"
Second that.
-
I third that 😊😊😊
-
Ran Earth direct to frame then direct to battery-no difference.
On basis not an earth issue, any other thoughts-please?
-
Think I had this when I built CR Rep - seem to remember (was a few years ago) it was the wires the wrong way round on relay? (aftermarket relay was used)
-
Remove the relay.
Is it a standard unit?
See if you can try it on another vehicle.
Should work on cars etc.

I usualy go for a step by step appraoch with wiring...
Disconnect the indicators.,.... then connect just hte earth side. Apply 12V to theother indicator wire...see if it lights. Then reconnect...and go to the next step in the wiring to see where it tkaes power from ...like the relay. Disconnect...and apply voltage...see if the bulb lights. And so on. Once you know the basic wires connect corectly, and hte switch operates...then worry about the relay.
BUT....if none of them are working, and the earths are good, Most likely it's the relay or the switch.

Just to confirm-indicators and console light all work-just no flashing.
Relay is genuine item and working before being posted to me a few days ago.
However will try all suggestions offered.
Many thanks
Paul

It's unlikely to be an earth fault if the bulbs light up. The relay relies on 44.2W of bulbs, (which takes 3.8amps) to discharge the internal capacitor so you get the correct flash rate. That's 2 x 21W plus the little one. If you go sticking 10W bulbs in or LEDs, it isn't going to flash.

Maybe it was damaged in the post?
They are mechanical after all.

Frequently need engine running for flashers to work
-
All wired up with correct bulbs and engine running-still no luck
-
Are you using a 3 or a 2 pin flasher?
-
Genuine 3 pin flasher from another 400/4
-
Only two reason for no flash if all bulbs lit
1 not enough load
2 duff flasher unit
-
I replaced mine with a 2 pin one. I think it was about £8. It does sound like the unit is duff. You've got the correct load, and they all illuminate. Csnt very anything else really.
-
Thanks for advice everyone.
Looks like no indicators for time being.
Take care and stay safe.

Working on the basis of "Any port in a storm", back in the early 1970's I worked part time in a motor accessory shop and we had a home made gizmo for checking customers' flasher units if they thought they were faulty. I checked one unit for a chap and it did not flash, just stayed permanently illuminated. As he was about to purchase a new unit, I went to pass him the old 'duff' one and dropped it on the hard floor. As a laugh I re-tested it and as you can guess it worked perfectly! Just a random thought, and after all, what have you got to lose? Stay Safe, Mick.
-
Ah yes, the old 'hurling it at the floor' trick
-
I tried hitting with hammer!!
-
Hi got the same problem (sort of ) indicators would flash a few times then freeze so put two pin flasher unit on (second hand ) and Indicators work a few times then freeze again . I gave unit a flick (with finger ) and hey presto they work but for how long I don’t know !
-
I had something that sounds similar - both the front and rear lights, and the console light would come on, but not flash.
The battery I was testing with was dead (i.e. not holding a charge). For testing my wiring loom I set up a bench power supply at ~13v and magically the indicators started flashing.
I just hope they continue to flash when I get a new battery.

Should do
-
Or have engine running or both
-
un crimp the unit and carefully remove the internals there is a earth wire from the internal part of the flasher to the alu body of the flasher and there should be a good contact between the alu body and the green terminal. if you look the green teminal on the underside of the insulated board makes contact with the can and it gets very corroded there. Give that bit a good clean. Hope that all makes sense.
-
Think he sorted it now, turned out to be bulb wattage
-
Thanks for advice,ordered 21w bulbs-wrong ones came!!
Will also consider earth solution.
Thanks
Paul
