Misc / Open / tank de-rust
« on: August 02, 2021, 03:26:53 PM »
Ok i know it has been covered before but it is doing my head in! I have de- rusted the interior of my spare tank using phosphoric acid as recommended by Ashimoto. It works very well leaves it completely clean metal. The issue i have is it rusts again overnight, and had the same problem with my old tank. So these are the methods i have used with no success. If i flush with clean water then with petrol, it rusts. If i let dry without flushing the phosphoric acid it leaves a black tar like substance which only cleans off using more acid. I also tried swilling some diesel around and still it rusts! I don't want to line it as most people on here are dubious about them so what do i do? when the tanks are new they dont flash rust so why does it happen?

CB500/550 / petrol tap
« on: July 31, 2021, 03:19:27 PM »
I am in the process of sorting out a spare tank for my 550 f2, and it has some slight differences from my other tank. the main issue is the thread on the fuel tap, on the old one its 16mm and the taps are easy to find on ebay. However the new tank has a 20mm thread and they seem to be harder to find. While i have been looking for one i checked David Silvers website and saw on the 400 four repro tank you have to use a later usa type tap and i was wondering if that is a 20mm? The outside spanner size is only 22mm, if anyone could confirm or deny that would be a great help.

CB500/550 / 550f2 seat
« on: May 29, 2021, 12:42:23 PM »
My seat base on my 550 f2 is not great, has been repaired in the past and is solid-ish and the foam and cover have seen better days but functional. I saw on facebook a repro seat someone was selling at a decent price so took a risc and bought it. At first i was pleased, it looks decent so tried it on this morning but i doed not fit well at all. I searched for other posts and seems like a common problem, but is it worth modifying to fit? And why do the manufactures make reproductions that are not as near as possible to the original? Ok its a fibreglass base, but also the pattern on the seat is wrong, the fixing bolt mounts are in the wrong place, th rubber spacers don't line up with any part of the frame and the grab strap is also wrong and the chrome ends a different shape. So anyone out there got a restorable seat for f1/ f2 for sale? Bitza will be looking down and laughing but good seats are hard to find.

CB500/550 / 550 tank
« on: May 23, 2021, 09:52:20 AM »
Apart from the paint scheme is the 550k3 and the 550 f2 petrol tank the same? My f2 tank has had the tank badge area fillered over and i would like a spare tank to renovate as original, and there is a k3 one on ebay.

CB500/550 / fork seals
« on: May 09, 2021, 03:28:59 PM »
I have a leak from my fork seal on my 550. They were replaced when i rebuilt the forks and done about 60 miles since, the fork leg is not pitted. I also had a leak at the allen screw at the bottom that holds the stanchion in which i thought was the copper washer so replaced that and thought that was job done. now i am not sure if it was fluid leaking from the top seal and running down or was actually the washer? So any recommended suppliers of seals and any tips on fitting, although it seems easy enough and done it before but why is it leaking so bad?

Tricks & Tips / removing caliper pistons
« on: January 13, 2021, 11:56:50 AM »
I cant remember who suggested this method but just tried on two old seized calipers and worked a treat. Basically you screw a grease gun end into the thread where the hydraulic pipe fits, only needs a thread or two so even if the threads are different it will still work. Make sure the bleed nipple is tight then pump away until the piston pops out! Comes out quite gently so not dangerous, i now have two calipers that can be re used.

CB500/550 / swing arm cb500 or 550k3
« on: December 30, 2020, 02:00:26 PM »
I got this swing arm with a job lot, it has the open wheel end with the stoppers to make it easy to remove the wheel on the 4 exhaust models. The question is, is it a 500 four or a 550 k3 or are they the same? is there an easy way to tell?

CB500/550 / santa came early
« on: December 19, 2020, 01:41:47 PM »
after some people had mentioned Agbrigg chrome platers i thought i would give them a try as the lead time was less than most. I emailed first to see if they were still working as it was in last lockdown, and Sean was very prompt at replying so i sent them off a few weeks ago. Yesterday he rang to say they were ready, i paid with paypal, and lo and behold they arrived today. I had 2 fork ears and 2 indicator stems done for my 550 and they turned out nice, £70 delivered so well chuffed, can recommend.

Just picked up a load of spares for 500/550 as a job lot, including an engine plus extra head etc and lots of other chassis and brake parts. I will be selling some of these to re-coup the cost so if anyone needs anything specific just ask.

CB500/550 / alternative to taper roller head bearings
« on: February 12, 2020, 04:12:18 PM »
Saw these on ebay, might be a better fit than the taper roller conversion kits that stick up too high at less cost than genuine items.
