CB500/550 / Meaning of jet sizes
« on: November 10, 2012, 04:48:05 PM »
Hi All,

I what to know the sizes of the holes in the jets in mm i.e 110 = what, so I can re drill the jets i have until i hit the right number.

I have built a new exhaust system to quieten the 550/4 chop down, 2 into 1 into a common silencer box under the frame but know it runs rough. (needs more fuel).

With 4 straight throughs, it went like a scolded cat, but it was way to load.

With the new system it is whisper quiet (and before anyone says its to restricted the silencer is of a re direction type. Newton third law and all that).

Thanks

Paull

CB500/550 / 340,000 miles
« on: June 02, 2012, 02:48:31 PM »
Hi All,

I was talking to a bloke at whiteways cafe today and he reckons his 550/4 has 340,000 miles on it.  :o

Its has never been rebored, has had two cam chains, two primary chains and one set of pistons.

He has done some smart mods on it like external oil gallery's from crankcase to head so eliminating the head to bore o-rings and potential oil leaks.

It had a home-made hydro clutch and a single SU carb.

And all this on one clutch.

Cool or what.  8) 8)

Hi All,
Just what some advise really.
Has anyone drilled out the rivets in the rim to separate the spokes hub etc. and can you bolt them back together, say with dome nuts and stud.  :o
I also have not got it to rev up past 5500rpm it has no air filter and I want to put pods on it, so I assume I need bigger main jets, will I use 102 or 118 mains. :-\
Thanks for any help

CB500/550 / Charging problem
« on: September 27, 2011, 04:36:21 PM »
Hi All
I have an f2 the alternator coils show 1.2 ohms across the three yellow phase leads, it said 0.39 ohms in the Haynes. the other coil is fine 4.9 ohms as per the book.
I have 2 alternators and there the same as above.
The regulator is old and pitted on the top contact, can i just file it flat, it shows 0.5ish ohms between black and green lead.
How do i a just the voltage out of the reg.
New rect, so hope no probs with that.
Thanks for any help

CB650 / New project
« on: September 16, 2011, 11:38:15 AM »
Hi All,
Just got a CB650z 1979 and i am going to build a (lookalike)norton featherbed frame for it.
I have no idea if someone else has done this but any info would be handy.
A few questions first.
What horsepower does a 650z make (not what it says in the book) in reality?
What is the top speed of one (don't want to frighten myself  ;D)?
What is the motor like for abuse in the top end of the revs?
Thanks for any help

CB500/550 / Just a tip
« on: August 01, 2011, 05:22:56 PM »
Hi All,
I have just found out you can use the long 12mm fine tread engine mounting bolt (thats the bottom one)to pull the primary shaft out the case before you split it, no need for special tools.
I don't know if this will help anyone or if someone else has done it.
There you go

My CB550 f2 has a 16ins wheel with a 120/90 tyre on it, what differents will this make over the standard 18ins wheel, the bike is now far from standard.

CB500/550 / Questions Questions
« on: January 24, 2011, 09:49:09 PM »
Hi All,
I have a CB550f2 in bits and want to know:-
Is fitting a 650 cam is a good idea?
What is the best electronic ignition?
Where do I get a full set of electrics (15 years in the rain)i.e. Rectifier, Regulator,Solenoid,Fuse box, Capacitor.
The electrics don't have to be original there going in a chopper.
Thanks for any help
Paul
PS
By the way the frame I built in a lot lighter then the original.
