CB500/550 / 340,000 miles
« on: June 02, 2012, 02:48:31 PM »
Hi All,

I was talking to a bloke at whiteways cafe today and he reckons his 550/4 has 340,000 miles on it.  :o

Its has never been rebored, has had two cam chains, two primary chains and one set of pistons.

He has done some smart mods on it like external oil gallery's from crankcase to head so eliminating the head to bore o-rings and potential oil leaks.

It had a home-made hydro clutch and a single SU carb.

And all this on one clutch.

Cool or what.  8) 8)

Hi All,
I have and do use evostik and never had a problem, put it where you want it, let it harden off a bit and wack it on job done.
This is just my experience but it works for me.

Hi All,
Just what some advise really.
Has anyone drilled out the rivets in the rim to separate the spokes hub etc. and can you bolt them back together, say with dome nuts and stud.  :o
I also have not got it to rev up past 5500rpm it has no air filter and I want to put pods on it, so I assume I need bigger main jets, will I use 102 or 118 mains. :-\
Thanks for any help

I have boyer on my 550 chop and it runs like a scolded cat, I will run out of balls before the bike does.
My Mate said, when I went past him at 80 I mean 70, it sounded like he had a cat stuck in his back wheel and then this red bullet screamed past.
Starts first push of the button.

Hi All,
Success, got the bugger charging, 14.5v at 4000rpm.
It said on the new (RR24) reg/rect instructions that the green (earth) to the old reg has no connection.
This is infact not true, you have to connect it to a frame ground or the centre coil in the alternator won't work.
(New shiny thing will not work, bugger, ask me how I know) ;D
Thanks for all the help, we are getting there.

Hi Chaps,
Well I have prodded, poked, polished and tested, no improvement whatsoever.
So I have bit the bullet and got myself an RR24 reg/rect.
I was just wondering if it makes any difference what phase wire (Yellows) goes from the alternator to the reg/rect IE yellow one to yellow one or can I just plug any of the yellows together.
I hope this make sense
Paul ::)

Hi Bryanj,
Thanks, I never thought of testing the metre at source, I have a digital self-ranging metre under

Bryanj
Just downloaded the workshop Manuel makes the Haynes look like a comic.
It is still saying 0.35 ohms +-10% if under this unit it is defective, so I assume over is OK.
Will set up regulator as per the book and go from there.
Thanks

Hi
Thanks for the comments.
I like her and she is unique, cause I made her.
I love it and will be out on it next year, after sorting a few teething problems.
I am on Brit chops too.

Hi All
I have an f2 the alternator coils show 1.2 ohms across the three yellow phase leads, it said 0.39 ohms in the Haynes. the other coil is fine 4.9 ohms as per the book.
I have 2 alternators and there the same as above.
The regulator is old and pitted on the top contact, can i just file it flat, it shows 0.5ish ohms between black and green lead.
How do i a just the voltage out of the reg.
New rect, so hope no probs with that.
Thanks for any help
Paul
