Title: engine removal hell !
Post by: antonypo on April 24, 2014, 05:01:29 PM
i have everything off the frame, including carbs swinging arm and wheels, forks etc. saw a video that the engine can come out complete less the carbs, to the right but I'm struggling. I have now chipped a fin slightly so am worried to carry on .
What else can I do. ?

Not sure what video you see but, it is easy. I do it by laying a 2" thick polystyrene sheet on one of the bike benches, then lay the bike on its right side . Unbolt everything and lift the frame off the engine.

Second that , struggled like mad getting the engine out with the bike upright, when it came to putting it back in I had heard of the laying the bike down technique , so easy took about 10mins.

Yes Mark but, the next trick is how to move the engine about once out. Not easy with something that comes in at about 87kg.

Mine has wheel and rotates. And what do you do with that if you need to work on the sump? ;)

Anthony,

Sorry to sound obvious but have you removed the top breather cover, ... sump... and oil filter?

Not done the '750 but these bits definitely need to be removed from the '400F first. And it wasn't totally obvious .... it looked like it would come out with the breather cover on... but nope.

If no 2" foam handy you can try an old sheet on the lawn when you lay the bike over.

Cheers

took the oil filter off but the top cover wont come off as all the screws are hard down. However the book says just taking the inspection covers off is enough.
Looks like i need an impact driver then? I also though it didn't mention taking the cover off so as not to damage the rockers etc???
The video i watched (cant find it now) had the cover on too.

Oil filter and inspection cover should be OK. To make it even easier, remove the sump pan. When fitting a engine i always leave the inspection cover, oil filter and sump off. This makes it easy not to scratch the nicely painted frame. Before you impact drive any bolt/screw from a old engine, spray them all with WD40 or Plus gas and let it soak.

I have done this many times and you can argue all you like removing and refitting I have always done it with the top breather cover ON and the sump ON.Sump off for 400/4 dead easy. There is not alot of room but WITH a mate who has done it with you before POP.

Bitsa, Whats a beer pump got to do with this . I thought it was about engine removal, and it is much easier with a nice new bench. O' and engine stand  ;)

Yep
Dead right but a barrel connected to a pump while you are doing all this graft is perfect. Will look into that here will make cold wet shit weather much more enjoyable. You agree?

Good idea Bitsa, Put a beer pump on the bike bench. Never thought of that one and cheaper than going to the pub.

Antony, I didn't take anything off mine except the carbs and oil filter, the only thing that made it awkward was taking it out with the frame upright, the engine is heavy and difficult to grip, I put straps around it and used a wooden beam with a person at each end lifting and me manouvering the engine, it took about 45 mins and was difficult to do, lucky not to get trapped fingers etc,  when I put it back in the engine was in the same configuration, however it was incredibly easy this time because I was able to manoeuvre the frame around the engine because in comparison it's light and easy to handle, I got a mate over to help me and it took less than 10 mins, I'm sure that removing the engine would have been just as easy if I had lain the bike on its side, so don't take anything off that you don't have to, your just increasing the risk of damaging something.

Mark.
Seriously with a mate who's done it with you b4 POP.I know you are going to know all arse but honestly I have done all the 60s to 70s engines and most of them had to come out to get the head off etc real easy as most wife's,girlfriends would say its all in the wrist actions honestly it is.When you are ready stay cool with a mate and sorry to say most of it is up and under.Lift up at the front and slide the arse out and straight out the right side.Same going back but if you only do this once in a life time its a frackin nightmare
Dont kid your self this is going to be a git forget and just do it.
Cheers
