CB500/550 / Tapered head bearings question
« on: August 08, 2018, 03:18:03 PM »
Do you still use the lower dust seal and washer when fitting tapered head bearings? Just checking before I fit them and there's none in the kit and no destructions either. Thanks, Sye.

Thanks all, I will keep an eye on eBay for a while and get the repro ones if I have no joy. £36.00 for two levers is extortion!

Is it worth paying three times as much for a genuine lever or are the aftermarket ones good?

Thanks all. Spent the whole day cleaning out the inside and stripping off the old paint. Stainless piston on it's way via Grahams eBay link and seal added to the DSS list. Should have it painted up over the weekend, then left a week to dry thoroughly and rebuild.

Thanks for your collective help it's much appreciated.

Why new body, how bad are the scores? If the piston is still a reasonable fit the body is serviceable, its the seal that does the work which you would be replacing anyway on a rebuild. A stainless piston can easily be made on a lathe, I have stainless bar if you have a lathe or a mate.

I am going to clean it up first and see if it can be salvaged. If not then it's probably the DSS replacement linked above by Mr Hairy or body 'A'. There are stainless pistons available online for around £28.00, so that's an option if it is usable. I don't have a lathe and have bought several mates but none with a lathe sadly. Even if one of us did, we wouldn't have a scooby what to do with it...  ;D

I've just stripped the front caliper and forced out the piston with the compressor and am astonished at what I've found! The inner bore is scored and was coated with coppaslip, the seal is toast and the piston is s pitted as to be useless. I need to replace the caliper body, seal, piston and bleed nipple at the very least. Strip the old damaged paint off and refinish.

Pricing the individual parts leads me to believe it may be cheaper, quicker and cause me much less grief to replace the lot. There are plenty of offerings out there but I have no idea what's good and what's not? Any pointers or recommendations most welcome.

On a positive note, the frame turned out really well and is hanging from the garage rafters.  :D

Thanks for your offer Graham but I have form A stainless M18 washers at 3mm thick with a 34mm o/d in my spares box. I will polish it up so it looks chrome and it should look fine.

I'm getting together the bits that are missing for the eventual rebuild. Someone has put a brass shim under the swingarm rear axle nut instead of the 18.5 x 34mm washer, which is unavailable as a genuine part. M18 x 34 x 3mm thick washers are readily available and will do the job but does anyone know the original washer thickness please?

Thanks, Sye.

Thanks all, I think I will stick with standard sizes and keep it looking original.

That fits an F2?

Saw it but as it only listed Ks I moved on. So much to learn!
Maybe Sye got his links muddled up, it doesn't fit an F

Oops, soz, somehow an F2 became a K2  :o

CB500/550 / Replacement rims
« on: July 28, 2018, 12:51:20 PM »
Hello, I've decided to replace the F/R rims as it will be cheaper than getting them chromed. The rear isn't too bad, with some quite severe marks and some flaking but the front is rotten. I have searched the forum and some suggest replacing them with the larger rear rim from the 750.

Is this a good thing to do? Are there any issues with clearance or anything else I need to be aware of? Is there anyone out there that wouldn't do it and why please?

Thanks, Sye.

Bolleau, will have to send it off with the rest of the stuff when I find someone to do a dozen or so bits. Thanks Graham.

Can someone please tell me what finish is on the brake rod. I know it's not rust but there are traces of both silver and black paint. Thanks.
