I am currently fitting rebuilt wheels to my '75 400/4 that I restored in 1986 ! I couldn't find NOS DID rims in '86 so I used Suzuki Takasago rims (bought from Queens Park Motors Oddjobb ) and non-standard un-butted spokes. Anyway, with eBay and internet, (not around in the mid '80s ! ) I have just rebuilt replacement wheels with the proper period DID non-side-scripted rims and the correct Honda spokes.
I noticed that my Aug 1975 bike had a hex headed rear wheel spindle fitted and it's not correct as it should be the -286- part ..like the CB250K , although I believe it was BZP finish on the CB400F, not chromed. Also I noticed that among my collection of front wheel spindles, some have hollowed ends and some are solid. I think the '75 should have the solid end, BZP finished version. Any ideas? I think my original rear spindle must have been from a late F2 model or perhaps a CJ250T.
Going back to spindles. I have a CB550 F1 / F2 with a hex head and the flanged nut. Everywhere i have looked for the part number it comes up with 42301-300-020 which is from the 750 [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Is there meant to be a small amount of side to side play in the rocker arms then? I assume that's what they were trying to alleviate.
Rotor off tomorrow hopefully then I'll be able to see tge extent of the wear a bit more, fingers crossed! Is there a point at which engine wear isn't salvageable, I might as well prepare myself🤣
All engines are salvageable, it is just down to cost

I am always shocked on a fair few engines that i have stripped and done an assessment report. Some have been complete horrors

What length did he send you Ash ? Extra length depends on how much extra. As all aftermarket lines will not be spot on
It's at home and I am at work mate .. approx. about 35mm
One we refurbished Julies 400, we used 390mm total length mate

Yes, I typoed an extra "0" in my message. So for those that work on these engines regularly - that clearance (as stated in the manual), .05mm/.002" IS CORRECT? In handling that thickness feeler gauge, it seems like pretty much "no clearance!"
It is correct in the manual. All the rest: 500, 550, 750 SOHC are 0.08mm on the exhaust and 0.05mm on the inlet

Tappet clearance is 0.05mm on the 400. I don't know too much about the set up on a 400 but, a expert will be along soon
