Title: Tyres
Post by: RGP750 on September 23, 2017, 07:25:01 AM
Hi Guys
I have just got rebuilt wheels back fot the 1972 cb175 and now looking for tyres .
2-75 x 18 and 3-00 x18
I really wanted a period looking rib on the fronyt and in Dunlops can only find K82's
which is the pattern we commonly used (i think they were TT100's then )
The only rib i can find are cheng Shin , I'm not a racer and will endevour not to go out in snow or pouring rain
so has anyone had experience of these please?
Ta Rich

Cheng Shin tyres are actually rather good on smaller bikes, nothing like the Nippon Slipoffs of the 70's and early 80's I have a pair on a C90, which is used two up in all weathers, and thrashed mercilessly, and they have never caused any concern. The company also makes Maxxis tyres for big bikes, which work well on my good lady's 650 shitehawk , sorry, Nighthawk.

The Cheng Shin is a very good tyre, soft and grips well but, they need to be used. If you are only doing low miles a year they seem to start getting cracks in the side walls before the tread will reach its limit.  Sliver dose them at a good price.

The Avon speedmaster don't go down to 2-75 unfortunate as that is what i first looked for.
Sounds like the ying poo could be the ones then .

Guys I speak to with CB72's use  Heidenau tyres Rich and swear by them. Sadly, I don't think they do 3.00 front  in classic style though but a look in the excellent book on Honda's by Roy Bacon just now,  tells me that the CB175 has 2.75 front like the CB72.
Those tyres DS sells are not the correct speed rating for the 400/4 or the CB350K ... as another member on here pointed out to me (our mate who lives near you Rich  :D) I wonder how that would stack up if there was an RTA and subsequent inspection /insurance claim.

Not sure if Cougar still do the ribbed for small bikes

Maybe worth a phone call on this one Rich, used on loads of British bikes   https://www.ajs-shop.co.uk/acatalog/ECO-FRONT-TYRE-2.75--X-18-BGB_T2983_2_75_18P.html

I have had a Chen Shin ribbed on the front of my 400/4 this year. Lovely soft compound and sticks like s••t to a blanket. I think Maxxis and CTS are the same tyre but under a different name.

Must be ok Julie if you keep up with Trigg ;D ;D

Haha, I will be lucky to keep up with Trigg on anything Rich. The closest I have ever got is me riding the Thundercat and Trigg on the CD250, I was  faster than him on the straights but he kept overtaking me on the inside of left hand bends and then I was in 2nd place again until another straight came up!!

I think metzeller do a rib type that will fit the 400 but may be too wide for the 72, but it was about £90 plus drat and carriage trade price! 3.25x18

Went I was living round the corner from you I needed a set of tyres for a SV650, Watling tyres in Ashford were outrageously expensive >:(

Where did you go then Trigg.?
I can't seem to find anyone that does bike tyres around here except
bike shops and they are even more expensive.

I got them from a supplier in Andorra in the end, less half the price of Watling. Get all my tyres online now  ;) Wanted a high speed sports tyre this year, phone my trade supplier (Who said they could beat any price) £112, ordered the same tyre via Andorra for £70 including P&P  ;D

Just bought a couple of new levers and make the job easy...If you don't pinch the tube.. use your foot for the last bit. Done a couple this year myself and remember replacing tubes at the side of the road in the 70s.

I normally have more trouble removing the old then I do fitting the new.

I bought a rear tyre last week to hold as a spare from The Visor Shop. Good price and here two days after the order was made, so good service. There was no charge for carriage, either.

I have also bought a tyre recently for the CB500 from a local bike shop (Swaffham Motorcycles). It was ordered in, arrived two days later and still cheaper than most of the tyre specialists that I see advertise TT100's.

I fitted a pair of Continental twins to my CB750 wheels at the weekend, I was worried I was doing it wrong as it seemed too easy! Actually I did start to put one on the wrong way round but soon realised.

When I used to do my own and had terrible battles there was no one to show me what I have since learned from watching professionals do it on YouTube, which is the importance of getting the bead of the side you are not working with into the well in the centre of the rim. I just used to leave it where it was and have a great stretching match, with added swear words.

I did pop into the garage yesterday, to check they had stayed up, as I have pinched a few inner tubes in my time.  ;)

I could only find the K82 tyres from these people

https://www.vintagetyres.com/shop/en/tyres/dunlop-k82-universal-287
https://www.vintagetyres.com/shop/en/tyres/dunlop-k82-universal-286

Tyres are easy to change with the right equipment. I do them all the time on my sport bikes as well as my enduro race bike, so long as I have the right tools to hand & lots of tyre soap. They're also easy to balance when using my rig. The equipment has paid for itself after only a few tyre changes.

BTW. Maxxis & CST  (Chen Shin Tyres) are the same. I had a CS tyre on the front of my first bike, a CB125s & it was lethal in the wet & only marginally better in the dry, hence my change to Avons very shortly after I first started riding it back in '75.
