Title: Frame and Engine numbers
Post by: jon stead on August 06, 2017, 12:32:34 PM
I see people refer to their bikes with a comment, "matching frame and engine numbers". I realise this is in reference to the bike's originality, but what does it mean?

For example, my bike frame number is different to the engine's. They are both CB500(E)210xxxx but the last four digits are over a thousand different. Does this mean that the engine is not the one it left the factory with?

I believe if not all but most hondas are out of sinc...
I did see the 7th cb77 for sale and that had number 6 engine (could be slightly out with the exact vin but you get my drift)so they do get out of order pretty quick..
Infact if i came across a real matching number bike it would probably ring the alarm bells...

Gonna ask now has anyone seen  matching number bike
Wasnt a matching number sancast project up for sale a year or so ago and that raised a few questions?

Do you think frame and engine numbers can be up to a thousand out and still be original?

I guess it all depends upon how they are manufactured.
If the engines and frames are married up and then stamped, I would expect them to match (like Yamaha). FAIK Honda engines may have been assembled in a different plant - but wherever they were made, they were stamped at the time so when finally introduced to a frame the numbers would never match.
